I actually agree with them all:

• Players should receive a stipend between $3,000 to $5,000;

• The NCAA should cover eligible players' insurance premiums;

• Athletes should be able to accept loans up to $50,000 against future earnings;

• If a coach leaves an institution, players should be able to transfer from that program without having to sit out a season;

• Athletes should be allowed one round-trip flight home every year.

1. Wow, the economy must be hurting in Kentucky if he wants his players to take a pay cut.

2. Ok. I can deal with that.

3. Good deal if you are player who is going to make millions. What do you tell a kid who is the 12th player at a school and will never play again while he's watching his buddies in the starting 5 get 50k and doing what they will with that? Are you going to tell a kid who is going to be holding a low paying job for a few years he can't get paid while his teammate can? I'm not sure about that.

4. OK

5. I'm good with that.

I think the loans should come from the NCAA. And if you don't become a pro, and your degree in some bs major doesn't result in a career, the loan should be forgiven. :)

Also agree with just about all of them, perhaps not the loan one, but that could be amended into something useful. The stipend model I think is infinitely better than the unionization/employee model that's being pursued now. Considering D1 athletes cannot feasibly hold a job, even part-time, while taking classes and maintaining their practice/game/travel schedule, a stipend per semester equal to ~20 hours a week of work would be more than reasonable.

I agree with the above two if and only if the following is added:

1. Any debt athletes take on as a result of the 50,000 against future earnings is dischargable in bankruptcy (unlike most student loans).

2. If a coach leaves an institution, the coach has to sit out one year prior to coaching, unpaid. Make it the same for both.

The money should come from the NCAA. And only be available on a need basis.

Kind of off topic, but somewhat related. In the case of an injury like Eric Legrand suffered, who pays for his care going forward?

If coach k or knight came up with this the ncaa would have no problem accepting this

I don't know, the insurance thing is awfully self serving for him and his one and done crowd. They're not talking about helath insurance, they're talking about insurance against possible lost future wages. What percentage of college athletes actually needs that? How would they decide who gets insurance and how much?

I still feel like the answer is to get the NCAA out of the way. They should have no say in how much a player gets. They're basically employees of the university who's pay is capped at tuition costs. At least that's the argument that's being made by the pro-union players. I don't see how applying another cap helps. In my mind they should be able to get what they're worth and the NCAA should have nothing to do with deciding that. I really don't want them deciding anything, they've proven themselves unworthy to make even the simplest most obvious decisions. Why empower them to do anything else.

I actually opened this expecting to see something rediculous

You must have missed this part then:

"I think we could have gotten somewhere with me as the point man, but the NCAA was not interested in my help," Calipari said, according to the WSJ. "The message I got, between the lines, was, 'No, not you. Not Calipari. We don't want him involved.'"

Yeah its a real shock John that the organization that had to strip you of 2 separate final fours, wants nothing to do with you spearheading this.

I'd also like a rule allowing players parents to be able to attend post season games/ tournaments/ senior nights on the universities' dime. Or perhaps a certain number of games per year. Not every game, but some.

There's parents out there who never get to see their kid play in person. Or only one parent can afford to go to a game. It's a joke.

1. I don't have a huge problem with this. I kind of favor the "cost of attendance" model but something along these lines would be ok.
2. Hard ot say without knowing a lot more details. How much is the insurance for instance? Who is eligible? Personally, I think the NBA/NFL ought to offer that and fund it.
3. Oh sure. That wouldn't be an opportunity for abuse...please! No way would I favor that.
4. I can just see it now. Auburn decides to hire Calipari and his whole team...Please, again. Maybe I'd give a transfer an extra year but sitting out protects the integrity of the game. Wouldn't expect Calipari to understand that.
5. No problem with that. In fact I'd go further and allow more than one in the event of family emergencies like death or serious illness or in a positive light, things like weddings of immediate family members. You would need some guidelines though. I can see Cal trying to arrange a flight for a kid from Lexington to, well, Lexington as a way to funnel cash to him.

That would be easy to fix though. Don't allow a player to transfer to an institution with a newly hired HC or to an institution that hired one of his current coaches or assistants.

I would just keep the year sit out thing in place. Cal is proposing a solution where there is no problem.

I would modify as follows

  • 3-4 round trip flights home
  • When a coach leaves you may transfer but not to the same school as the coach
  • The 50k loan needs to be backed or countersigned by the school in case the player cannot repay the loan, but only if they graduate
  • Stipend should be tied to grade and years , for example c average in year 1 is 2k, b average year 2 is 5k
You guys do realize that the players receive money on travel trips, a per diem for food. Typically they also attend team meals, so it's a little extra cash.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but a great NCAA change would be to remove the Squid from the NCAA. After all, we know much of that money would be funneled back to him anyways.

I doubt the kids who commit to a program, only to have the coach leave as soon as they get there, would agree that there's no problem. But I don't think your chief concern has ever been the kids.

"No" to #4

Players sign with a school, not a coach...once you commit, that's it...if you want to transfer, get ready to sit out.

In 2009-10 the Memphis line up should have been:

Willie Kemp (four-star)
Elliot Williams (five-star)
Xavier Henry (five-star)
Wesley Witherspoon (four-star)
DeMarcus Cousins (five-star)
------------
Doneal Mack
Roburt Sallie
DJ Stephens
Will Coleman

Wall never committed to Memphis, he was all clear to go to Kentucky...so was Eric Bledsoe...Cal didn't need to raid our team on the way out...and THAT is why Memphis fans are still sore about Cal...that team could have been REALLY good.

Not to piss on your pain, but I think kids commit more to a coach/program than to a school. Let's say Jim Calhoun recuited a kid then decided to retire. In his place, the school hire an untested highschool coach to run the program. Think that is fair to the kid? No way.

Then why even have LOIs? Why even have transfer rules?

Let's just set salary caps, pay the kids, let em form a players union, and destroy everything that was/is college basketball.

• Players should receive a stipend between $3,000 to $5,000;

I was a poor college student too who worked two jobs etc etc. I'm okay with the stipend but do kids need more than $100 a week? Which athletes are eligible for the stipend? How about taking the money off the top from NCAA/football media deals and disseminating to all eligible schools?

• Athletes should be able to accept loans up to $50,000 against future earnings;

I am struggling with the intent of this item. (assuming) We're going to give kids a stipend. They're not paying for school. What exactly is this money needed for? Is the understanding that this is money these kids would be earning in the NBA/NFL? I guess if you want to allow athletes the burden of what would essentially be student loan debt (and I would cap the loan equal to the federal loan max for UG). The majority of them will just be stuck paying the money back for the next 10 years of their lives while working common jobs.

I too don't get what this is about. What are you doing, putting a down payment on a condo in Lexington? If you aren't paying for school and you are getting a stipend for spending money, I'm not sure what this is all about. Beyond that, I just see all sorts of potential for mischief.

As for the "problem" of guys who commit to a coach and he leaves, welcome to the real world. As I said, you'll be having Auburn hiring Calipari and his whole team. I can just see Texas trying to get out of Alabama's shadow by bringing in Saban and his entire recruiting class. You can't force anyone to have integrity.
