JC's future with UConn after last season was a hot topic here last summer, and I admit I wondered why he waited so long to announce he was returning. I guess we know the reason why now - he was taking the "conservative" route to treating his ailment, hoping it would improve enough to make it through another season. Makes it all the more likely that he's going to need surgery now.

Throughout last spring and summer, Calhoun left open the question of whether he would return to coach a 26th season at UConn. It was then that he began feeling the pain in his lower back, and it was decided that he could manage it with therapy and stretching exercises. In early September, he told UConn President Susan Herbst that he would return.
