John Silver conversation with HCPP.

>>"The Huskies are moving rising junior Byron Jones to corner from safety full-time to help gain more height and strength in the secondary. Jones is a 6-foot-1 athlete who played both corner and free safety as a freshman before stepping into a starting role at free safety last year.

Jones will now move full-time to corner as the height, athleticism and strength are exactly what the Huskies need to replace Wreh-Wilson and Gratz.

Jones won’t be the only one moving. Ellis Marder is also headed to corner according to Pasqualoni."<<

I hope Spackler doesn't read this. Talk about opening up old wounds........

” The way I look at it, I think there is something like eight games the last two years decided by seven or less points,” Pasqualoni said. “We just have not played smart enough in those real tight games. It is unfortunate, if you go all the way back to two years ago, the Vanderbilt game, it was third and 7 and we threw the ball and got a pick and it went back for six and we lose the game. We should have run the ball and tried to play defense. That was my fault. We tried to make a first down and run the clock out.

More length on the corners is a good thing. The other corners are more nickle types to cover the slot receivers

I think it's a great move. If they find another quality corner I think the defense is going to be rock-solid again with some solid linebackers to compliment Yawin too.

Somewhat odd to mention the physical condition of your likely backup QB who isn't a dual-threat guy? Trying to send a message to Whitmer already perhaps?

Depends on the questioned asked - no?

Edit. My point is...

DC to HCPP - "How is CC's wrist - all healed?"
HCPP to DC - "Casey Cochran is in the best shape he's ever been in."

Cochran is what, 19? I hope he's in the best shape of his career, or is this pasqualoni's way of saying the qb position isn't for whitmer to lose, but rather for him to win? in any event it feels good to have true qb competition.

Don't know if mccummings is truly contending, so interesting to see who redshirts among Boyle/lagow. no early enrollment won't help lagow.

Yeah, that's probably right. I was assuming the quote was unprompted when talking about the QB's. But it feels like the wrist injury was a long time ago and wasn't something that impacted physical fitness too much.

Whatever. Pretty much everything is trying to read between the lines right now. I hope CC locks up the backup spot and never has to be used because Whitmer ends up having a fantastic year.

^ I can't wait to see Joe this year, J. Williams is 5'11 200lbs+ and runs a 4.38 forty! And embarrassed our defense last year during practice and scrimmages... cannot wait!

Some other notes about spring: DE Jesse Joseph will participate, but be limited (Achilles) and won't do full contact.

Also, at DT, Campenni, McBryde, Pruitt and Myers will vie to replace Ryan Wirth. Stephen is on the other side. Big concern for pasqualoni.

DT won't be a strength, but I think we've seen enough from Campenni, McBryde, Pruitt and Myers for the DT rotation to be serviceable. In college there's very few programs that can consistently produce above average production at all positions- interior lineman, ends, LB's, CB's and safeties. Almost every program has to mask weaknesses somewhere.

If the DT rotation is the biggest area of concern, the defense is in real good shape for next year.

Still can't wait to see what 6-9 Andreas Knapp and his wingspan can disrupt...

Here's the solution for the red zone defense problem, play the Don Brown defensive scheme outside of the redzone, play the Randy Edsall defensive scheme in the redzone.

Problem solved.

I'm glad to here the defense won't be changing much. Stay aggressive.

Not at all surprised that Jones moves over to corner. Hopefully some of the young DBs develop for us and with Mack and Stephens in the fold I think we're OK at the corners.

Do we get the LB play with Sio and Jorry out of the mix is the big question in my mind. Somebody has to step up big there to plug those losses.

I'm much more concerned about the offense, however. We are in desperate need of a RB to step up to compliment McCombs.

>>UConn Coach Pasqualoni Says QB Casey Cochran In Good Shape (http://courantblogs.com/uconn-footb...pe/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter)

UConn Coach Paul Pasqualoni said redshirt freshman quarterback Casey Cochran (6-0, 214) is in good shape to start Spring Football Monday in Storrs.
That’s good for Casey because toward the end of the season he let the good shape slip and added a few pounds.
Asked if he thought it happened because he was down over the wrist injury Pasqualoni said he thought so.
“He did get a little heavy,” Pasqualoni said. “The fact that he hurt that wrist/thumb and was really limited, kinda knew he wasn’t going to go in the game, I think he did get a little heavy but he looks good right now and has run well in the agility workouts. I’m anxious to see those guys at the quarterback position.”<<

at the open practices in August it was pretty clear that Casey takes after his dad in the weight department. He looked to be built like a fire hydrant.

Huh? Looks pretty good in this picture from the first week of August alongside Whitmer?? I could only dream to have that weight :)

End of season I could probably understand the PP comment... not before.
