Brittney Griner excited for Baylor women's basketball plan to retire her jersey

Since last year, Baylor WBB head coach Nikki Collen has been saying she wants to honor Griner -- who was part of the 2012 NCAA championship team. The Bears will be getting a new arena next year, and the coach wants Baylor to retire Griner's jersey. Foster Pavilion, which is replacing Ferrell Center, is expected to open its doors in January 2024.

Griner played for Baylor from 2009 until 2013 under Kim Mulkey, who is now the head coach at LSU. Collen did not take over in Waco until 2021. "That's the goal," Collen recently repeated her plans to ESPN. "We're opening a new arena. There's no doubt that I want to see her jersey in the rafters."

Britteny Griner is the best player to ever wear a Baylor WBB uniform. Her jersey should have been retired long ago. Strong majority of Baylor fans are very happy that Nicki Collen is doing this !

Good for BG. I think the main reason it wasn’t retired was due to her not finishing her degree until summer of 2019. They could have (and should have) retired her jersey during the 2019-20 season, but after that basketball was limited in 2020-21 and a big part of 2021-22, plus she was detained for part of 2021-22 and 2022-23. I hope Baylor fans come out in waves to support her.
