Just sat down with Xavier Rathan-Mayes' stepfather, Tharon Mayes, for a feature story I'm doing on Tharon ...

... Tharon said Xavier's preferred schools are Florida State (Tharon's alma mater), #UConn, Memphis, Baylor, Alabama and UCLA.

Said Xavier will take unofficial to Florida State within next couple of weeks and decide officials after SAT's in early September.

On #UConn: "He likes Kevin Ollie a lot. It's definitely a school of interest. (The Calhoun situation) is something that's a little scary."

Can't imagine he's the only recruit that feels this way. I think we need a little more transparency.

no mention of UK, was it Zagoria that put the theory of a Wiggins/XRM package deal out there or was he citing a source?

I thought xrm was the one that said he could see them playing together, and UK and fsu were the only schools both were looking at so UK became the popular choice amongst several recruiting gurus...if I remember right

I think what happens a lot is these kids get asked direct questions like "Hey Xavier, how would you like to play with Wiggins in college?"

And of course, what do you think he's going to say to that? "No, I hate playing with that guy. He never passes me the ball. I'm looking forward to getting as far away from him as possible in college!" He's going to say "Yeah, sure. That would be cool."

Next thing you know, Zagoria or somebody else says that they might be a package deal.

I get that the Calhoun uncertainty would be somewhat of a concern but if he's that fond of Ollie why would it be that big of a deal? Ollie will either be there as an assistant or presumably as the head coach if Calhound doesn't return.

So you think that's 100% guaranteed?

Yeah I agree that's a big IF...

If another coach is brought in that potentially opens up a whole bunch of issues (depending on Ollie's mindset and that of the new coach).

I for one want Ollie, his character is top notch and it provides continuity.

But if Ollie would be psyched to be head recruiter and Ass HC beneath say Shaka Smart I wouldn't mind... But Shaka might.. One bad season and everyone is screaming for Ollie...

For Andrew Wiggins, it's either Florida State or Kentucky ... Oh well.

No, not guaranteed, but there have been some decent indications in the media lately. That might be a bit reassuring ???

A new guy from outside the program isn't going to keep Ollie. In fact, I wouldn't want any coach who would agree to that. It would reek of desperation, I want a strong coach in there. It's one thing to keep a guy like Howie D. with no claim to the job, it's another to keep a guy like Ollie with his base of support and aspirations for the job. The new guy would be constantly looking over his shoulder. It would be like deposing the King but letting his son hang around the castle. There was a reason those guys were sent into exile, or worse.

I agree, though I wish I didn't have to. The only reason there might even be a slim chance is bc Ollie such a like able guy.

I don't even see why Ollie would stay on as an assistant. He could've easily had a job in the NBA after his retirement, why would he stay on here as an assistant to an outsider if he got passed over for the head job?

Many players including XRM love ollie. He will either leave to become an assistant in the NBA or take a head coaching job at a pretty good D1 school. If he wants to be a college head coach than going somewhere like San Diego State when Steve Fisher retires seems reasonable. he's from So Cal and would beast recruiting in the area. The only complication is his family. Is he going to make them move around with him. I just hope ollie is hired as coach. I feel like UConn would get 2-3 additional top notch recruits for 2013 if he was named head coach going into this season. XRM could be the first to committ to head coach kevin ollie

Calhoun will step down by choice. If he ends his career after 2 years in orderly fashion than Uconn will do a national search and likely take a proven game coach. He knows he must step down right before either this season or next season to put the university in a position where Ollie will have to be the coach for a year. this will allow ollie to prove himself. I know you're half joking, but I just wanted to clarify my point.

Alright sarcasm aside, I like what you're thinking because I want them to name Ollie too. But just because a couple kids (who change their minds every minute as we know) say if he were coach they're decision would be swayed, doesn't mean we will be better. The timing is key in order to assure that but I'm not sure JC would do that to Manual and Herbst either....but he is JC and likes to get his way huh? Never know......for now let's keep the stubborn Irishman on the sideline and let the "rookie" hone his craft though!
