Boise State non-football sports possibly to Big West

I will say this; San Diego State stepping up to the plate to help Boise State seems like we picked the right traveling partner. At this point, they could have said, "Screw it, we'll both go back to the MWC." This seems to suggest two things to me:

1) The reports of Boise reconsidering their desire to join the Big East were greatly overstated.
2) The reports of a large Big East tv contract may not be greatly overstated.

Both are going to help me sleep better at night, knowing that UConn will be in a good place, no matter what happens.

The new Mountain West football conference blows. It's at least 8 million a year for SDSU even if the BE deal is underwhelming.

So that's true, but what will SDSU's cut be in that as a football only member. Is it 75%? Less? I haven't heard what the breakdown is going to be for the "football-only's." You have to figure that the payouts for the Big West for their entire athletic department is going to suck. So essentially, they are comparing two numbers:

1) Big East football payout + Big West olympic sports payout
2) MWC conference total payout.

I still have to assume that the Big East contract should be sizeable enough to make the first option better, but I don't know if it's so cut-and-dry.

I rounded to 8 on the BE getting 12 with 9 for football only and MWC getting 1 for football. There can't be much between MWC and Big West basketball.

Maybe the new MWC could get more than a million, but there is absolutely nothing in that league going forward.

So has it been determined that the football-onlies are going to get 75%? I tried to look it up but I couldn't find the info.

No. It's just an easy % to use and makes some sense, you won't know until the deal is done because it will depend on who is actually in the league.

I had heard through the grapevine that the BE basketball schools wanted a 70% payout, but that didn't make sense to me, and I can't "re-find" the information. That's what made me wonder whether or not the football-only's would be above 50% payout. It would make sense, to insure that they stay, but still having a hard time finding even speculative info.

It was in an ESPN article recently, and I found it appalling. Football schools should get football money. Everyone else can split the remainder.

I knew that I had seen that somewhere! It would be crazy if a school like DePaul asks for 9 million out of a 12 million dollar contract, when barely 20 people see their hoops team play in Chicago.

We'll likely see the BE as the closest split of any conference.

National Football presence is a problem.

The A-10? Basketball Revenue and Expenses total about $3.5 mil per team. Value that media contract whihc is at best $600,000 a team and is designed to cover travel expenses.

C-USA? Their contract was for $1.2 mil a year for both sports. That was signed last year with half of the BE.

THhe MWC? they voted against raiding the C-USA because the USA contract was better :)

Sure the BE offers more content and some larger markets and skimmed the better teams downstream. I've got Football at $3.5 mil and basketball at $4.0 mil in year one of a new contract. 125% over the last year of the present contract

So if I'm following you, you believe that UConn will get 7.5 million per year (both football and basketball), while Boise will get 3.5 million per year. I've gotta be honest with you; if that indeed ends up being the case, why would Boise join us? If I'm not mistaken, Boise makes about 1.5 million now (see link). If we only pay them 3.5 million, they may not come.

They can assume that if they and SDSU stay in the MW that they will be able to get at least close to that, without the hassle of long travel and having their other sports in the Big West. The way that I see it is that the Big East would have to offer those two teams at least 5 million from the next contract, or else face the possibility that they don't come. The tricky part is this; if Boise doesn't tell the Mountain West that they are leaving by June 30th (before our tv contract negotiations), I believe they risk a payout of 10 million if they don't go to the Big East. Also, we have to keep Navy on board (no pun intended), and 3.5 million probably isn't going to float their boat (pun intended). It will be interesting to see how the split finally works out...

Pretty much everyone who has made a public estimate on the contract disagrees. We may never know.

I'm using the first year figure and assuming the average over the lifetime of the padded contract will be announced 50% higher ($11.25 mil per team avg with a yearly 6% escalator over 15 years. Standard backloaded deal). Starts at $7.5 mil for 15 years with everyone knowing the conference will never fulfill the terms as written due to some unforeseen events
