Bob Hurley Sr. Championship Pre-Game Speech

Just started reading Woj’s book about Bob Sr. “The Miracle at St. Anthony”…good read so far. Woj called Bob the greatest bargain in sports. Takes someone really strong to never leave a tough place like Jersey City for more comfort and money.

The whole doc is a great watch. Gives you a new appreciation of what a badass pops is…
It's been said a lot before, but the Miracle of Saint Anthony's is a good read. It certainly highlights what a bad ass coach Hurley (Senior) is, and in places it's almost cringe worthy. That's balanced by the fact that Bob Hurley Sr. could have left Saint Anthony's and coached at the college level. His life would've been dramatically easier and he would've been financially much better off. Instead, he stayed at the school, single-handedly, keeping it open because he knew the positive impact that was having on peoples lives.

For those who don't know, coaching at Saint Anthony's wasn't his full-time job. It was a side gig that was his passion and led him to being a multi time national champion, and in the Naismith Hall of Fame.

In our lives, we all have moments when we can choose the easy path or the path that has maximum impact on the lives around us. Coach Hurley chose the latter and, to me at least, that is his greatest legacy.

Coach Bob Hurley Sr has more quality and more character in his left big toe than most DI coaches (fill in the names you want) have in their entire beings.

Threatening to knock someone out is cowardly and extremely wrong
I hear you Scrappy and you are not entirely wrong, but the one thing I will guess is that he had no intention of doing that, it was tough talk and he loved those kids. That was an era where it wasn’t touchy feely and particularly in a Catholic school. Just watch The Blues Brothers and the nun opening for a comedic insight into that. They would smack you upside the head in the old days. Can we have some stories from the Catholics out there please?!

The drive to succeed his son has is directly descended from that. Yes it’s great for us but it has meant the ride for Dan wasn’t always smooth, he’s had his problems. But I’m sure he wouldn’t change a thing about his dad.
