I have to say this: Boatright has turned from a player who I was most frustrated with and did not want to see in the lineup his freshman and soph years, to a player that I respect and appreciate as much as any other UConn player in the 25 years I have followed UConn BB.
His freshman and sophomore year, he really struggled with turnovers and decision making. He wasn't a very good outside shooter and he didn't finish at the rim well. I gave up on him going into his junior season. But then I saw something really change in him as the season progressed. His defense got 2-3X better, he was finishing at the rim better and he developed a really nice 15-18 foot spot up jumper. I think he realized that he was not the man, and he played a role on the team and deferred to Napier. I can only imagine what would have happened to him and the team had that Shabazz "shove" in the championship game occurred earlier in his career - I think it would have shut him down and we would not have won the Fourth. It was at that moment that I saw how mature he had really become.
Fast forward to this year, and I have been even more impressed with him. He knows his role this year is to be the leader, the top scorer, the top rebounder, the top assist man, and he has taken on that responsibility and I think, delivered. I marveled at the last several games where after some challenging offensive possessions, he maintained his calm and reset the the offense - the RB of the past would have tried to force a drive into traffic or taken a quick 26 footer. His maturity and basketball IQ has once again grown incredibly from year to year.
I was one of the ones critical of Ryan for always going to a jump stop and getting his shot blocked on fastbreak layups. I smiled the last several games where at least on two occasions each game, he had layups going off on one foot - and in situations where the split second mattered.
Ryan, thanks for proving me wrong. I should not have doubted you but now really appreciate and recognize how you've grown as a person and basketball player. No matter what happens this year, you are a winner and a champion.
Note - I realize you can say this for many UConn players who went through their senior season, but for some reason, I really appreciated RB's transformation - maybe because I was so critical of him early on.
