Over his last 4 games, Ryan is avg 16 ppg on 53% shooting from the field, 83% from the line, 47% from 3.
He's averaged 3.75 rpg, 3.5 assists per game and 2 turnovers for a 1.75 a/to ratio. For all the criticism hey gets, Boat has been playing tough when we need him (at least on the offensive end).
Niels, Omar and Kromah are a combined 2-21 from 3 over these same 4 games and a lot of those looks have been open. Are we the best 3 point shooting team in college basketball like we performed over the first 8 or so games? No. Should we expect 9% shooting from these 3 going forward? No. When you can't hit open shots and that should be the strength that counterbalances your deficiencies inside, its going to be a rough go.
Nolan played 6 min in Texas. Has TO Passed him on the depth chart? Is he still sick? Phil might not finish pretty inside, but he can handle an interior pass from Bazz. I still think he's our best option at the 5, his absence was not strategic and we'll be better when hes back.
Some wrote "one-dimensional" in the one word thread. Until we establish the ability to score on the low block, teams will continue to overplay us on the perimeter. We're starting to see teams purposefully take the ball out of Bazz's hands. SMU not only over played the hedge on the high screen, they were straight doubling bazz at times. Deandre was 2-12 inside the arch in Texas. If he's not a threat on the baseline or in the mid range, there is no answer on this team.
This team's ceiling over the last 40 games has been the ability to beat anyone . Their floor has been the ability to lose to anyone. Is beating Florida and this Texas road trip regression? Last year we beat MSU in Germany and 9 days later we were in double OT with Quinnipiac (Enosch was still around for those longing for Wolf). This is still a team that needs to hit shots to win or get bit by the fact that we can't compete in the interior. The only thing that's changed is our expectations.
SMU is now 9th overall in eFG defense on the year. Their statrank on statsheet.com is 39th. That's better than Georgetown, Michigan and UCLA to give you a few names. Would you feel better if Saturday was a road loss against those teams? Kenpom has them 38th overall, we're 44th. The great part about the American this year is we get both Houston and SMU again in our place.
Many are attacking KO because the team hasn't improved. Aside from Omar and the 5, I'd say everyone is better this year. Omar deserves the benefit of the doubt post surgery. The 5's are undersized and inexperienced. We basically lost 2 full classes in the exodus and the ban/coaching change's impact on recruiting. We can't change our stripes. Improving one dimensional, is still one dimensional.
Hit some shots, reestablish Deandre inside, get back to playing defense as 5.
