Bill Introduced To Allow College Athletes to Form Unions [merged thread]

For the athletes this is great news. This pretty much says it all: Trahan, who played volleyball at Georgetown before her time in Congress, said that the NCAA uses a system that "collects massive amounts of revenue off the backs of unpaid labor, funnels it upward, and offers no way for athletes to negotiate the compensation, safety, or playing conditions they're owed."
On the flip side, it's only a matter of time when college sports will become just like the pros in terms of holdouts, lockouts, ugly collective bargaining squabbles with the NCAA, etc.

College athletes would be able to form players' unions and would be considered employees of their schools if a new Congressional bill introduced Thursday morning is passed into law.

Paige because she could talk to anyone about anything and not be deterred. Nika could be the "enforcer" who encourages cooperation between parties by reminding them of potential pitfalls for lack of said cooperation.

If they want to be an employee, then take away the scholarships and make them pay for their education.
 
This could also lead to many colleges opting to drop to D3. Most D1 programs already lose money, and almost all D1 sports are money losers already. If players unions manage to negotiate ridiculous standards, many colleges will rightfully just throw in the towel.
 
Yet another chapter of the beginning of the end of college basketball as we know it. I hope I’m wrong but I believe all this will end up taking college basketball down the same path as pro sports and we will see many of the same issues that have led to a massive decline in interest and viewership in the NBA, MLB, and the NFL. They (the NCAA) suddenly seem unable to make measured, incremental changes that might save the village without destroying it in the process! The corruption that’s been simmering beneath the surface for so long has degraded them to the point that they are like politicians desperately trying to hold on to power. They have lost their way and are merely trying to stay relevant at this point like people who are so afraid of being called out for their beliefs, that they simply abandon them and end up hollow inside! Pretty sad to see!

Look on the bright side, universities can focus on their core missions one of which isn't providing a free development league for the pro sports.
 
And all there unions will support each other. So, if the Drexel Women’s Rowing team refuses to hit the water because their oars are sticky, the Alabama football team is right behind them. This should be fun.

This is not new. A few years back the Northwestern football team pushed a plan to unionize with the help of the United Steelworkers. While the initiative ultimately failed, the biggest issue was not necessarily athlete compensation. A bigger issue at that time was long term medical coverage for ex-college athletes who had suffered debilitating injuries during their college playing days.

As it stands right now, if a college player suffers a serious injury at college, their medical care is covered by their college or university so long as they are enrolled at the college as a member of the team, and subsequently at the sole discretion of the college. In a related issue, think about Sedona Prince suing the U of TX for an injury incurred prior to enrolling, claiming that the TX medical staff did not provide adequate care once she enrolled.

Ultimately, the effort to unionize Northwestern and college sports at large was doomed to fail because of the incredibly difficult task of organizing a large group of diverse athletes spread across hundreds of colleges and universities across the country. Opposition from politicians, the NCAA and colleges themselves to athlete unionization efforts will likely be too much to overcome for the limited efforts by some athletes to form a Union.

Nah, Bama is a right to work state and the pay is too big.
