06 Elite 8 vs George Mason

If we hadn't stunk up the joint all tournament long, I'd agree. It was a good choke for sure, but I don't know how epic it was in that context.

In retrospect, we didn't spit the bit at the end of the game or anything. It was more an improbable win for GM.

I don’t care how you look at it, we had NO business losing to George Mason, let alone with a Final Four on the line.

It was horrible as a fan but you can find a dozen similar scale "chokes" in college hoops without even trying. You're 2 golf comments were far more memorable.

1964 Phillies. A team with several great players just collapsed.

From Wikipedia

The team is notable for being in first place in the National League since the opening day, and then suffering a drastic collapse during the final two weeks of the season. The "Phold of '64", as it became known, is one of the most infamous collapses in baseball history.

A dozen? With a Final Four on the line?

Only 4 11-seeds have ever made the Final 4.

LSU - No explanation required
George Mason - 2 NCAAT appearances since
VCU - Sustained a reasonable amount of success
Loyola Chicago - Beat a 6, 3, 7, and 9 to reach the F4

We screwed the ultimate pooch.

To be fair gmason beat some very good teams to get to the final four. If I recall MSU, UNC and, I don't remember the third but I think it was another good team. It was a devasting loss but gmason deserves tons of respect, that was a very good team, under rated. They were 27-8 and the few P5 teams they played in the regular season were all close games.

The FF gives it more gravitas for sure, but I think #1 Virginia losing to #16 UMBC is the 1st friggin round is a bigger choke.

That's never happened in the history of the tournament, and I won't be surprised if it doesn't happen again for 30+ years.

You may be right because of the FF implications but I'm thinking UMBC, Mercer, Lehigh, Etc
