...to the individual who manages Husky Games Online. And the Boneyard.
This life-long Husky had to leave his beloved New England in 2014 and freely admits that becoming disconnected from all things UConn was one of the major sacrifices. The vicissitudes of life landed me in, of all places, Kansas City...or as I call it : the Land of Burnt Umber.
I miss the sugar maples and white birches. No skiing at wonderful old Bromley. No Northshire Bookstore. And no UConn.
But things have improved. On my first day in KC I happened to look up at an old brownstone and saw the state seal of Vermont carved into its side ! Like Ethan Allen, Remember Baker, and the rest of the Litchfield migrants, this 12th generation Nutmegger copied their example and moved to Vermont in 1982 and lived there until coming to the Land of Scraggly Trees. (For those who may not know : when VT declared its independence in 1777 it legally called itself New Connecticut). And then I saw all the New England state seals carved in the building's side. Later saw carved over the main entrance of this 1886 structure "The New England Building". Started humming the Husky Fight Song as I continued downtown.
A while later I walked past The College Basketball Experience museum. Large glass windows with huge photos. The largest photo ? The most prominent photo ? The Husky players at the moment they stormed the court at the end of the 1999 championship !! Wasn't embarrassed to stand there with my fist in the air.
Feeling a whole lot better about the Land of Guns and Bar-B-Q, I located a neighborhood sports bar. Proudly sporting my ancient and battered Connecticut Women's Basketball cap I asked if they'd put a WCBB game on one of their screens. The guy said: "Really ? What game ?" I said UConn and he said "Oh, the Connecticut women ? Sure." Now I walk in and they just ask me what channel.
But the greatest solace for this homesick Land of Steady Habits/Green Mountains Husky alum (bless the Field House, Buckley Hall, and Horse Barn Hill) is the Husky Games Online site and the Boneyard.
Qui transtulit sustinet. Thank you.
