In the event of a tie for first-place after next Monday's game between UConn and ND, which team will get the #1 seed in the tournament? Quite the double-header for Big Monday with lots on the line starting off the Huskies and Irish followed by the Cards @ the Orange. Can't wait!

According to SNY, if UConn wins out and each team has one loss to each other, they then go to the records of the other team that each faced twice: so for UConn that's Marquette and for ND it's providence. Marquette has the better record of the two, so UConn would be the 1 seed in the BET. Basically, if UConn wins the final two, they will be the 1 seed.

Not sure, but I think UConn could win the BE tourney as the 2 seed. Other than SJU, they have handled the opposition easily in all their wins.

Thanks CTGirl! Would it be too much to ask you to look into your crystal ball and tell us all who the actual #1 seed in the BET will be?!

Im telling everyone right know not to overlook the USF game especially when its played in South Florida. They are a tough tough team at home and this has all the makings of a "trap" game.

The key is to win on Monday. Beat those Leprechauns!

My Dear Milford

Would you agree with me, USF is not chopped liver? So the key is actually win the next two games; and do so one game at a time, right?

:-o

Not according to Carl Adamec:

"If UConn beats Notre Dame Monday night and the teams tie at 15-1, a coin flip will determine the No. 1 seed. The last time that happened in the Big East was 1990 when UConn and Providence tied for the top spot. The Huskies won the coin flip but the Friars won the tournament title."

Based on the report last night in the post game show, that rule was changed this year. They go to the record against the "other" team both played twice. I suspect Carl may not be aware of the new rule?

Yes, Kara reported in the pre-game show and pos-game show there is no longer a coin flip. Carl's analysis is based on an obsolete rule that was replaced this year. Record against the teams played twice and the better record against and of those teams is the deciding factor this year.

Yes, that would be the deciding factor. Under the tiebreaker rules, the first one is head-to-head - which of course would not break the tie. Then comes Step 2: look at each team's record vs the 3ed place team, then the 4th place team, etc, all the way through the last place team - but in that part of the tiebreaker being 2-0 vs a given team does not trump being 1-0 vs that same team. So that part of the tiebreaker also doesn't resolve the issue.

If comparison with all the teams which was done in Step 2 still does not break the tie - and in this year's Big East it does not - then they go back to comparing records vs #3, #4, #5, etc. But in this last pass, 2-0 does beat out 1-0. So in this case, Marquette will be higher in the standings than Providence, and thus UConn's 2-0 record vs Marquette beats out Notre Dame's 1-0 record.

BTW, prior to last night, Marquette hadn't clinched the higher spot in the standings. If Providence had won, then we still wouldn't know which way the tiebreaker would fall. If Kara reported pre-game that UConn owned the tiebreaker, then she was wrong.

This has always been the tiebreaker. I am getting tired of Kara and others calling it new. What is new is that there are two teams that you play twice. If ND and Uconn ended up tied and the only team they played twice was each other (like last year) and the only loss for both was to each other - it would have come down to coin flip. Now when they play another team twice the tie breaker ends up being based on the best record of the other team they played and beat twice.
