It's amazing to me how bad Big East refs are, I find myself getting pissed off watching every game because the officiating is so bad. Watching the Cuse Cincy game now and the refs missed 2 blatant goaltending calls. Yancy Gates shot a layup off the backboard and Fab Melo comes in as the ball bounces a foot off the backboard and swats it away with no call. It's really shocking how bad the refs are every single game.

...are terrible. This game is pathetic.

Spoiler alert: one of the refs, most likely Karl Hess, will make a horrible call down the stretch which will lead to a SU win.

I agree about the BE refs being horrible.

I will say that I think Cinci's Zubaz shorts are throwing everyone off their game, including the refs.

It will be so nice getting into the NCAA tourny where teams like Louisville and Marquettee won't be able to clutch, grab and mug you on every possession.

After watching a lot of college games, high school games, AAU games and youth travel basketball games I've come to the conclusion that refs everywhere outside the NBA are generally bad. You should see the ones that ref youth travel basketball games. The inconsistency in calls is terrible.

That's an interesting observation. I noticed that quite a few BE teams are playing Pitt ball this season. Marquette's guards bump and grind the ball handler all game long without any consequence. The guards in the WVU game did the same thing to us. Our guards are on the smallish side and are more effect by this than bigger and more physical guards. It sort of makes sense why UConn has struggled in BE play the past two years, but once they got into the NCAA where the officials don't allow teams to bump, clutch and grab, teams like UConn make a deep run while teams like the Pitt make yet another early exit. It sort of explained why many of the BE teams got bounced early, and some by lower seeds.

I think the way games are called in the tournament favor teams that play tough half-court D without hacking all over the floor. It also explains why Dook hasn't fared so well like they once did. K has made it an art form with his guards bumping the handlers a half dozen feet beyond the arc all game long. When the refs don't allow that, more athletic teams often have their way with them.

I'm already feeling better about our NCAA Tournament chances.

BE refs are bad. Burr needs to pack it in. He is out of position more than he is in. He cannot keep up with the speed of the game. They all need to understand the principle of goaltending/basket interferrence. Too much grabbing, slapping , and pushing off allowed. When the ball handler is allowed to push off it negates good on ball defense.

Burr and Cahill are highly regarded but they are not perfect. They work 4 of the 6 power conferences. Will be interesting to see if the Cuse and Pitt continue their rough style of play when they get to the ACC which is a finesse league as opposed to the BE.

I am inclined to agree with this, but then I watched a student of mine pound Ohio in a game last night, and wow, the refs in the MAC are worse than anything the BE has ever put on the court. The Buffalo coach was laughing at how bad they were. Kid dives for the ball end of game, game tied, the opposing player lands on his back, ref calls the foul on the kid on the ground. Constant crazy calls like that.

Unbelievable!

Calling a hoops game is hands-down the toughest sport to officiate. With that said, it seems bad officiating ebbs and flows year to year. It just seems particularly bad this season. I can't remember which year it was, 2 to 3 years ago maybe, when there were a bunch of late blown calls that turned the outcome of a few games. It was the same official on a couple of them. Kahill or Danato?

Calls are going to be missed, but there are few types that drive me nuts:

The incidental bumps on the handler and players off the ball where no advantage is taking place. Now I'm not talking about when a team, like Pitt, bumps, grinds and grabs all game long. In those cases, the officials need to recognize what a team is doing and start calling those early to send a message that they will not allow that type of game to be played. But to call a bump late in a game that does not result in a TO or impedes the the player which has been let go just about all game long is something that officials just shouldn't be doing.

The next is the let's let them play and not call anything during the last few minutes of the game. This simply rewards the team that gets away with more fouls than the other team.

Then there is the anticipatory foul where the official seems to be blowing the whistle before the perceived contact takes place. Replays frequently show that there was no contact in many of these bang-bang plays.

My last, and maybe the one that irritates me the most, is the quick call by the ref from the far side of the court with a lot of traffic in front of them when there's one right there in front of the play. It seems more time than not, the replay often shows it is a bad call. Just what you can see and not what you think you can see!

I'm sure there are many other types of call that drive you nuts. As bothersome the block/charge call can be, I understand how hard those are to call at full speed. I just wonder if the NCAA can put a little more money into training for officials. Teach then what to look for and maybe use computer simulation to test and train them. Teach then to look for the offensive foul arm bar on drives, the late slide under when the offensive player is already into the last stage of his move to the basket, what a flop looks like, what's considered out of control where a the offensive player should be called for the charge, etc. I'm not sure what the rule is, but I never have a problem when a defender is moving slightly and an out-of-control driver (the ones who are spinning or going backwards into the paint) initiate the contact. One call in particular needs to be cleaned up is when a player drives towards the hoop, dishes off, but has what looks like minor contact but the defender explodes to the floor like he was shot by a long range riffle. That's a let them play unless the handler completely blows up the defender who's feet are set.

So what type of calls blow your mind?

I'm impressed that the refs stayed to the final buzzer this year.
