It's fascinating that we ended up picked #1 in the conference by a massive margin yet ended up with one all conference first team player and one all conference third team player.

The difference of how UConn fans view Mahaney to how non-UConn fans view him is fascinating
I think UConn fans who didn't appreciate Mahaney initially have already realized what a great player he will be for this team.

You both and others might prove to be right. But with that having been said, Hassan Diarra absolutely deserves to be on that Preseason All Conference 3rd team over Mahaney at this juncture. Hurley has said it himself:

"According to recent reports, Dan Hurley believes Hassan Diarra will be his top point guard this year at UConn, with Hurley highlighting Diarra's importance to the team and stating that he expects Diarra to step into a leadership role at the position."

And if we have serious designs on a 3rd straight title, it is he who most likely will be more important than Mahaney toward that goal. Furthermore, he is the better all-around player. Mahaney is the better shooter (although Hassan showed dramatic improvement from two years ago to last year), but I would take Diarra on ball handling, quarterbacking the team and definitely on defense.

As for these pre-season All-Conference teams: coaches often end up listening to hype on who to vote for on other teams because they are pre-occupied focusing on their own teams. This pre-season voting once again proves that truth.

In the long run, it doesn't matter... it all gets decided on the court. And we be going for the 3Peat baby! The wait is almost over!
