Diggins, Martin lead Big East first team

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)—Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins and DePaul guard Anna Martin have been named unanimous selections for this year’s All-Big East team.
The first team also includes Irish players Natalie Novosel and Devereaux Peters; UConn’s Tiffany Hayes and Bria Hartley; Georgetown’s Sugar Rodgers; Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel; Rutgers’ Khadijah Rushdan; St. John’s Shenneika Smith and West Virginia’s Asya Bussie.

Peters also earned her second consecutive Big East defensive player of the year award, and UConn freshman Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis won the sixth man award. South Florida’s Jasmine Wynne is the conference’s most improved player.
The conference’s player, freshman, scholar-athlete and coach of the year will be announced Friday as the Big East tournament begins at the XL Center.

The 30 minute limit, prevented my comments from appearing:( Help Nan,JS! KML made 2nd team All BE. KML and Kia made all BE FR team. As many suspected,Kelly was beat out by Peters for Defensive Player of the year. Stef Dolson was Honorable Mention, which IMHO,should have been the least that Kelly should have been honored with. Scoring is what is seen by most as looked at as out weighing everything else that Kelly brings to a team:mad: She would be taken in a NY minute by every team in the BE and across the country. I hope next season, she gets the recognition IMHO she deserves.
The thread re Kelly today pro and con indicates to me why Kelly was not given any public recognition. Scoring is looked at as more important than the multitude of assets that Kelly provides!

I realize we are all homers here (I am, anyway), but honestly, who on the HM team would you NOT take ahead of KF? I'm hard-pressed to pick one:

Christal Caldwell, West Virginia, R-Soph., G
Stefanie Dolson, UConn, Soph., C
Katherine Harry, DePaul, Jr., F
Tia Magee, Georgetown, Sr., F
Katherine Plouffe, Marquette, Soph., F
Monique Oliver, Rutgers, Jr., F/C

WO getting into Caldwell,Harry,Magee,Plouffe,or Oliver in this post,I will adamently bring up Stef who I like and care for. The votes indicate 1st,2nd,and Honorable Mention. Obviousely Stef got vote or votes. IMHO,I would at the very least, have given Kelly a vote over Stef this
season. My choice of the 2 would not even be close!! I loved the play of Stef on Mon evening. For the season,it is Kelly in a landslide. I think Stef would agree. I understand how the voting is done.

Devereaux had several very big rebounding games in the past few weeks. I wonder if that made a difference. Kelly should have gotten serious consideration. Dev averaged 10.9 boards and 2.3 blocks in the conference. Those are nice numbers.

Not to disparage any particular player, but a first team of 11 players diminishes the award's honor. How do you arrive at 11, particularly when you pick 10 for the "second" team?

With 11 on the first team, there must have been a tie in the voting. They chose to put 10 on the second team, not 9.

I think Skylar will be the POY. She and Martin were the only unanimous 1st teamers.

I think Kelly deserved HM. I also think that Kaleena should have been close to 1st team.

In the POY voting 4 years ago, some upstart freshman from UConn was selected. Maya was one of a kind.

UConn and ND have the luxury of depth that often leaves superior players on the outside looking in when it's time for individual recognition. I'd take Faris and McBride over many that made the list. Being the 4th or 5th option doesn't allow one to put up the numbers that will be recognized. Put them on another team and let them take the same volume of shots and it's a different story. Also, the BE treats weekly awards and end of season award similar to my nephew's tee-ball team: everybody gets to bat and everybody gets an award. Spread the wealth.
