Big East back to nation’s best conference? Just might be

The Big Ten won the Gavitt Tip-off Games over the Big East this year and have more teams in the top 25 than any other conference. I think they are the top conference. The Big East might be second best though.

This would be gravy. I don't think the new big east will approach the big old bad-*ss big east, but that is fine with me. It may not have the most Top 25 teams either. All I care about is that it has competitive, compelling teams playing in the Northeast and we get to go home to MSG. The Big East Tourney at MSG alone is 20 times better than playing in TN or FL or TX.

Big 10 is 111-39 non-conference, Big East is 99-25. The leagues are 8-8 against each other. Objectively, the Big East is better than the Big 10.

The numbers say the Big East is the best league top to bottom. That said, even as crazy as this season has been, I think only Villanova and Seton Hall have Final Four talent out of the Big East teams, and I don't see Seton Hall beating 4 good teams in a row in March. Butler is well coached, but I don't think they have the talent to make the Final Four. Creighton could make the Sweet 16 with a couple of good games and a good draw.

I watched some of the Houston game last night. I was surprised by the tiny crowd.

Announced attendance 7035.

Villanova vs Xavier...announced 6501

Ha. 6501 is the sell-out for the tiny on campus arena. That's where Nova plays on week nights.

7305 must be paid at Houston. I'd guess half that or less through the turnstiles.

Right !

Houston bad...Villanova good...got it...LOL

Houston not bad. I was interested and watching the game. They are 11-3. Maybe it was just the TV angles and there were more in attendance than it looked, but there were lots of open seats on the sides in the lower level.

FSU football bad though. Finished with a losing record :)

Why U interested in FSU? Or football?

FSU, in a terrible season, at least plays big boy ball.

Towson, Bucknell, Stony Brook, William & Mary, New Hampshire....be still my heart !

because you live in a glass FSU house and you throw stones

Nope...you just got upset that I called out your gratuitous swipe at Houston's attendance.... and pointed out that it was better than Nova's the last game.

You just got a little mad on...it's OK...I got it.

Ha. Not mad. Nova's on campus arena is a joke. Every game is 6501.

I'm not sure that camera shot proves Zissou's point, the only empty seats I see are the ones reserved for the visiting team directly behind UCF's bench. (For what it's worth the Fertitta Center seats 7100, so that's 85 unsold seats)

The Big 12 has Four teams in Kenpom's Top Ten....they look pretty strong.

The Big Ten has 12 teams that may qualify for the tourney. The only reason they don’t have more top 25 teams is because they beat each other up.

Same for other conferences

Other conferences have 12 teams likely to make the tourney who are beating each other up?

Other conferences could have more teams in the top 25 if not for in conference losses.

The Big Ten won’t get 12.

Bilas: He is a Duke homer...but his thoughts on tourney chances:

(His thoughts about officials now allowing "manhandling" caught my attention. He says they now swallow the whistle and motion can be impeded)

Really. The PAC-12 is so far better than other conferences there is no point to discussion. Who did they lose to? Each other. None of the top ten teams in the final poll could go undefeated in PAC-12 conference play.

The Pac 12 went 112-39 or 74% in non conference (tied with three other conferences for 3rd place in that category).

No special mastery over non conference games. The ACC and Big Ten lost the same percentage OCC and, thus, they too have the argument of beating each other.

If it is winning percentage...BE was #1

If it was OOC winning percentage...BE was #1

If it was average RPI....BE was #1

If it was average SOS....BE was #1

But...if it was NCAA tournament play...games won on the tournament courts last year and not computers...it would be the ACC....

This year? We'll never know.
