Marina Mabrey: does anyone remember any Freshman having a better HALF than Marina did on Saturday?
I really can't, but I know she was completely shut down in the 2nd half. The kid will be a player to reckon with.

One game does not qualify a player. You need to see the big picture.
Wait until the end of season then we can compare those two.

It's data, even if it's an n of 1. I think Moriah is an exceptional defender. She did a great job guarding Marina (Marina agreed), but there are too many people on this board who discredit Marina's performance. She stepped back and nailed a three pointer over Tuck, took it down the lane for layups, and drained a contested three over Stewart.

Conclusion: If someone can claim Moriah shutdown Marina based on a single game, then why can't someone else make another claim based on a single game?

You're comparing apples to oranges. One is a senior, one a freshman. It's going back to basics 101. That's why I compared freshman year to freshman year stats. Also note that what you referenced was Marina's worst game of the season. She also had a triple-double in the game before that: 18 points, 12 steals, 10 assists.

We can list stats all we want. The real reason for my post was to give credit where it's due. Marina played well. Moriah played well. But for some reason many people want to discredit Marina, and I assume it's mostly because she didn't have UCONN on the front of her Jersey.

I don't need to argue with you. A win is win.
ND loses to UConn is a truth, and you cannot change the truth. EOS.

Additionally, I can't cite the specific half, but I bet Clarissa Davis had one such 20 minutes sometime during her 1985-86 season for Texas...

I was thinking something similar to OP while watching the first half. From watching that and looking at her overall stats, I'm pretty inclined to think she is one of the top 5 freshmen. Muffet always seems to have a player or two who performs significantly better than expectations. I suspect that like Geno she looks for kids that are extremely competitive, willing to work really hard to achieve their goals and willing to be coached.

On Saturday before tip-off, Marina Mabrey was an afterthought in most fans' minds. Today, Husky fans are celebrating that their senior All-American guard shut her (a freshman playing in her 8th game) down. That's a pretty darn good half of basketball.

By the way, not saying that Jefferson doesn't deserve appreciation for her efforts. Single-handedly shutting down the opponent's most prolific player is always praiseworthy. But Marina went from being on the bench at tip-off to being the singular focus of Jefferson's defensive attention in the space of one half. That's remarkable, to say the least.

All credit to Ms. Jefferson for her defensive performance in the second half, which the younger Mabrey acknowledged and said she needed to learn from, as fittingly befits a frosh who has played in less than 10 collegiate games.

But, also, all power to the same frosh who -- in the first half -- didn't let the moment overwhelm her and unleashed the flood gates of her inside-outside array of talents.

As the summary article in the Hartford Courant suggested, basketball fans were treated to a gala event in early December when we could've gotten an early season game. Thankful for seeing it and hopeful that Marina and Arike will continue to grow.

I think that the older Mabrey is a good shooter, and the younger sister is supposed to be a better overall player and perhaps better shooter. Yes, she did very well, possibly by being under the radar. Then Moriah said, "I've got this." And she did.

When all is said and done, do you expect Mabrey will have had a better college career than Jefferson has had?

If we here on the BR are basketball fans, then let us appreciate the opponents play as well as the Huskies. Marina had an outstanding first half and good for her. If it were one of ours we would be offering non-stop praise.
That's all I was trying to say when I started this post. So many people can't read a statement just for the simple fact it states. They have to find ways to expand it to a whole new dimension.

To our ND guests, I'll bite - Marina was an absolute freak of nature the first half. It was like she was throwing the ball in the ocean. Is that typical for her or was she supernaturally hot?

Just checked at und.com. On Saturday, Marina shot 10-13 and 3-3 from 3-pt. range, an overall 70% clip. For the season, she is shooting 60% overall, 47% from 3-range. She's got 26 steals, which have led to a lot of layups, which help that percentage. So, yes, hotter than usual on the threes, but not that much overall. In my experience of watching her in HS and her brief college career, she takes what is there...and she's pretty aggressive and decisive once she decides to do it.

She was impressive, no doubt about it. She may start drawing the opposing teams best defender, which may cool her off a bit.

Congrats on her, she's the real deal.

As a scorer it won't surprise me if Mabrey has better stats when all is said and done. Will her hard work make her as catlike quick as Moriah? No, some things you are born with.
