Benedict, football guy?

I'm essentially agreeing with you. He wasn't brought in because he was a "football guy".
C'mon, are you actually implying Benedict may have been hired based on a successful record of accomplishments over about 15 years with P5 athletic departments (ASU 10, Minnesota 2, Auburn 2) and a few decades in university sports administration, fundraising, and operations management?

Surely, you can't be suggesting the guy may not be a gridiron guru yet shockingly may have some professional capabilities, compadres, and contacts to possibly identify a target list of well-qualified and successful coaching candidates and potentially hire good coaches.

Football guy, as in player or coach? No. Football guy in terms of understanding very clearly the critical importance of football to the department? Understanding key elements of football culture at a major university? Yes, that is exactly why he's here.
