Lots of details and memories:

"Connecticut almost lost out in the recruitment of Stewart to another Eastern team: Penn State. Brian Stewart said Breanna had a strong relationship with the Nittany Lions staff but ultimately chose the Huskies. After committing following a trip to Storrs, UConn coach Geno Auriemma was in Syracuse for a home visit with the Stewarts. They took him out to dinner at Santangelo's in Liverpool. As they finished eating, they were greeted by Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim and his wife, Juli. The Stewarts said Auriemma and Boeheim carried on such a conversation, "we left them and encouraged Geno to finish the rest of the evening socializing with the Boeheims.""

New to me. Almost blew it!!!

You gotta wonder how any young woman basketball player fails to commit to UConn. The warmth, cohesion, support of the Stewarts is analogous to the feeling you get with the Huskies. How could anyone not want to be part of these families? It's also instructive that along with the quality of the family goes the quality of the work product. Great families=great accomplishments. Love conquers all.
Side note: I can never get over how Bre's dad wears Bermuda shorts and tees everywhere, anywhere, and at any season of the year. He and his wife exude a down-to-earth quality that is endearing and has clearly rubbed off on their daughter. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy about being associated with such people and institutions.

Quoting from the article re: the Final Four:
"[The Stewarts] nearly missed the first one. In fact, they had not talked about going, nor had they planned to go, even as the Huskies made their way to the Big Easy. Brian said the presence of Baylor and star Brittney Griner was a major deterrent. "I said, 'Why don't we just watch it here on TV?'" Brian said. They changed their minds and went. Breanna was named the tournament's most valuable player. For the past two years, the Baldwins (Breanna's grandparents) have secured boxes in the arena. This year, nearly 50 people from the Syracuse area joined them in Indianapolis."

I didn't read the BY then. Has the subject of the game that was never played ever come up?

Players choose other schools for all kinds of reasons. Plus nowadays it isn't just Pat and Geno, there are other programs starting to take WCBB seriously offering opportunities to elite recruits without having to go to Storrs or Knoxville. If you're a prospective student-athlete you might consider academics, the college town/location/weather, the campus, maximizing playing time, proximity to home/friends, and so on. Some of these things there is simply nothing Geno can do about them, so he lays out what he's offering and the recruit either likes what they hear or they don't. We're not going to be able to win players over with our football Saturdays and high profile academics, but at this point Geno and UConn don't need to make much of a sales pitch - just turn on ESPN.
