Teams put banners in their gym to celebrate things that were important to their programs. Over time as a team improves old ones are sometimes replaced by new more important things. The biggest highlight for some programs might be getting into the NCAA tournament. Put up a banner and celebrate that. UConn has done that every year since 1989.
