Does anyone think that maybe, just maybe, someone in the athletic department or the football program will come to his or her senses and scrap these embarrassments before the opening kickoff? When your new lid is being compared unfavorably with Maryland's, well you know they are bad. And as you look at them, I defy you to tell me what he face is supposed to be. Now we all know its Donald, but if you hadn't seen Donald, it could be just about anything. A dinosaur? Maybe. A bear? Possible. A lion? Not a good one but might be. A wolf? Very possible. A bush league attempt at getting attention? Yeah, that's it!

I would rather UConn wear plain blue or plain white helmets, no decals, no numbers, nothing, than these crapsters!

I certainly hope not. I think they're great.

The athletes like them as well, and that's what's most important.
Nah, its not. 19 year old kids will "like" anything new. That is perhaps the worst reason to make a decision like this. You do realize that these will make UConn a laughing stock, just as their dopey design made Maryland one. In fact,we're already being laughed at over these helmets as the posting shows. To the extent that MD backed off last year to something not quite as hideous. Good news is that if 2013 is a disaster, we get rid of both Pasqualoni and these silly things at the same time. The downside is that they guy who oked these crapsters will get to pick the new coach.

ibleedhuskyblue, truthfully, if you didn't know what these were supposed to be, can you honestly say you could tell? Show the pic to someone who isn't a UConn fan and ask them to identify it. They won't know.

Maryland's helmets were clearly the design product of the "terrible car wreck" approach to getting people to look. Its so horrific that people can't turn away and have to talke about it.

UCONN's helmets seem to the product of a clothing designer trying to get the same response as the "terrible car wreck" affect when it comes to the inability to turn away, and generate interest, but not with the actual horror aspect, but more of a curiousity, did I really just see that? kind of of motivation.

I like the helmets, becasue as weird as they are, they aren't FUGLY, and will wait to actually see them on the players on the field, before I get my final judgement.

-I mean, are we really not allowed to like something you don't like?

But it's too nice a day outside to get worked up over our old pal Freescooter, and I got more important things to worry about but as an FYI, the helmets are being tweaked so the Husky decal looks a little better, not that it will fix the WORST ABOMINATION TO EVER BE CREATED EVER!
It is not the worst abomination ever created. Maryland cornered the market on that. But it is on the same level, just not quite as high. If they want to tweak the Husky decal, assuming it is indeed a Husky and not some other strange beast, I have a suggestion for them. Make it smaller, include the whole logo and relocate it to the side of the helmet. Better yet, make it all white, too.

For what its worth, I think the Indiana ones are dopey too. But they are just dopey. Ours rise to the level of utter embarrassment. Oh well, I suppose it is too much to expect big time thinking from our athletic department. Warde and Company haven't shown any to date. Why expect them to start now. Oh, and if those ugly helmets got Maryland into the Big, we ought to be getting an invitation to the Big 12 at least any day now.

The Indiana helmets are better than ours. The chrome 1 is a great 1 game type thing. Imagine blue and chrome?

Luckily no one cares what you think. Also, what you think is just plain stupid.
Enjoy being old and crotchety.

P.S. They will know who's they are because they have been all over the web by now. Opinions are all over the map, but they are opinions on UCONN.....which most people didn't have before this.

5 helmets? Really? For a 12 game season? Question mark? Why?

Freescooter catches a lot of shhhtuff here because he is so vocal about how much he hates the new helmets. But let's not make the mistake of thinking that he's alone. The helmets are not good. Don't be surprised if they are replaced after 1 season (or at least so I hope). The "call of the wild" design is pretty bad, fellas...

I actually don't mind the helmets and will give them a chance, but Dan is right FS is far from alone - a LOT of people hate the logo.

Not sure your point. I'm pretty sure you don't want the logo equivalent of broccoli. Just tell them you might not like the logo, but it's good for you?

My three year old daughter just started a random NBA Jam game on the ipad. Dallas at Minnesota. Her comment about the T-wolves logo on the floor: Jonathan is there.

If we go 12-0 I don't care if the helmets have Warde's face on them.

I'm old school but am starting to understand that today's recruits buy into exciting uniforms. That being said, if we don't win we could wear diamond encrusted helmets and it won't mean .

I mean anyone can just slap our logo on the side of a helmet and call it a day. Is that the "big time athletic department" thinking that you are always raving about?[/quote]
You're right. I mean, why should we follow the example of, oh I don't know, Southern Cal or Texas? Really, what do they know about being big time athletic departments? We'd rather follow the model of the Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football league! Everyone I know ultimately hopes UConn will be viewed as comparable to the "'Stormers!"

Honestly, how many people know who the Iowa Barnstormers are? Less than 1%? So UConn has a helmet that vaguely has a similar concept to a random AFL team that no one knows about, what does that have to do with anything?

Do I want UConn to be Texas or USC or Ohio State? Yeah, of course I do, but we don't have 100 years of football tradition under our belts.

However, there is a trend for schools without that longtime tradition of producing flashly helmets/jerseys as another means of garnering attention. Has it worked for Oregon? I like some of Oregon's uniforms but I also think they have put out some of the ugliest helmet/jersey combos I have ever seen and all they do is win 10+ games a year.

So maybe 50 years from now, UConn develops the football tradition we all want it to have, and you're friend "Donald" will have his pretty little face on the side of our helmets, but if we want to be Oregon-Lite for a couple years, is it really that big a deal?
That's my point! No major, or even D3 program has anything as bush league as our "call of the wild" helmets. They are a small time design of the sort that would be used by an Arena League franchise, not a major college program.

And that a handful of programs are now using clown costumes for their football teams doesn't mean UConn has to be one of them. And you talk about Oregon, but they have been a significant program for the last 15 years, at least since Bellotti arrived on the scene. Since 1999 they've been ranked in the top 25 10 times in 14 years. And they didn't wear the clown suits until the last 4-5. That isn't why they recruited well, they recruited well because they had good coaches and good teams (and partly because they apparently cheated). Stefon Diggs didn't go to Maryland because he wanted to dress like a clown on game day. Of all the things that get recruits, crazy uniforms and helmets rank maybe 57th on the list. these things are for 2 purposes. first to get Nike, or Underarmour, or Addidas publicity, and second to sell new merchandise. that is it. Just because someone on the interweb says recruits love these silly suits, doesn't mean recruits actually make decisions based on them. Otherwise Penn State ought to be getting its butt kicked by Maryland lately. Even with all their problems and recruiting restrictions, guess who had the higher rated class this year? I'll give you a hint. Their uniforms look like they were designed for football, not the circus...

I agree with scooter on this point. While lots of recruits react favorably to new hot and hip looking uniforms and helmets (cars and women too, BTW) they won't base their ultimate decision on any of that. It's who pays the most cash----grin.
