>>SBJ's Smith hits the wire with an "initial list" of nine candidates to replace Big Ten Commish Delany next year put together by Korn Ferry. The nine: Northwestern AD Phillips, America East Commish Huchthausen, B1G Deputy Commish Traviolia, ESPN EVP for Programming & Scheduling Magnus, MLB Deputy Commissioner for Business & Media Petitti, YES Network Prez Litner, Toronto Blue Jays Prez Shapiro, former USTA CEO Adams, as well as Ernst & Young Global Vice Chair for Public Policy Marciniak.

Key note from Smith, "Sources cautioned, however, that this early list is just a starting point for the search. Names will move on and off the list as the search evolves." (link $$)<<

Would be a great new gig for Susan. Lacrosse is a big sport in that conference.

Do you guys think someone with TV experience may get the post, given its importance as a revenue generator.

Herbst? I mean the timing can't be a coincidence can it?

As long as we add lax I like our chances!

It will be the Northwestern AD, IMO. Nothing earth shattering or surprising by saying that, obviously. Would be the smoothest transition. Put another brilliant minded person at the seat and move forward. What he has done with Northwestern football facilities and others, besides the stadium yet, is impressive.

IMO, watch for the Big Ten to strike a deal with a large casino partnership for sports gambling deal that could double their revenue. Don't know if the SEC or other conferences will do, but they should, but it's been mentioned among Big Ten talk that they are looking into it.

This will require a major change in NCAA rules. Right now, anyone part of the NCAA, including student-athletes, AD staff, presidents/chancellors, FARs, and conference staff are forbidden to bet on any sport (at any level, not just college sports) sponsored by the NCAA, in which there is a fee or any financial loss is possible. This includes fantasy sports and Super Bowl pool squares. Conferences or any other NCAA entity would not be able to partner with any sports gambling entity. This rule is almost as fundamental as amateurism. However, I could see one of these issues causing a breakaway of the P5, but not in the near future.

Hmmmm.... Did the Northwestern guy turn the job down (perhaps because NU countered?)?

Warren went to Penn for a year, and then transferred to ... Grand Canyon University. WHAT?
That would be like transferring from Yale to AIC.

Is anyone knowledgable about this guy? Has he said anything in the past that might offer clues as to whether or not he is an expansionist?

"This is one of those issues that I have on my list, that we'll definitely need to sit down and learn and really study, and figure out what's the best thing for the game, what's the best thing for this conference."

- Kevin Warren, on CFP expansion

Not sure if you were responding to my question or not. By "expansionist" I was referring to expanding the membership of the B1G rather than expanding the CFP (although I'd like to see 8 teams rather than 4). I think as a fan of UCONN or northeastern D1 football you want to see the Huskies go to a P5 if possible. Realistically, I think that means ACC or, possibly, B1G. If the next B1G commissioner is happy with the status quo that just closes off another possible avenue to Connecticut rejoining its one-time peers in the big leagues.
