Getting closer...

The plan for a four-team playoff is the hot topic in college sports this summer, with Big Ten presidents meeting in Chicago on June 3, then conference commissioners visiting the city June 20, when the hope is that a playoff plan can be established. A four-team playoff is expected to begin in the 2014 season.

As I read this, the playoff under consideration would not require four "superconferences". While the SEC, B1G and other strong football conferences would certainly have advantages, it could be possible for teams from conferences like the ACC and BE to be playoff eligible. Particularly if it were expanded to 8 or 16 teams.

And actually, the desire of teams to play strong OOC schedules in order to boost eligibility, could limit the movement to superconferences of up to 16 teams.

What they really want to do is to replace the Conference Championship games with a Quarter Final round where the 8 Conference Divisional Champs go to an 8-game playoff. Then winning a Divisions becomes meaningful and the #2 seeds in each conference get a chance to prove their point against a #1 seed from another conference.

The rest is all about what they can get away with and avoid a lawsuit.
