"For the Iron Bowl game against Alabama on Nov. 30, 2013, the school said that 13 different donors each bought more than 20 tickets at their $95 face value"

Thats an expensive ticket price - when you out price 90% of you fanbase then you are going to have trouble sellling tix.
$95 was a discount price.

It still is out pricing the fan base - $95 goes a long way in Alabama

"According to an independent audit reviewed by the Journal, Auburn sold all but 43 of these tickets to the Georgia game and 212 for the school’s miraculous win over Alabama" - WSJ

Considering they seat 87,451 I'm guessing Auburn is doing OK.

The article does state they ran a deficit of just under a million dollars for 2013 (it doesn't state the amount they have in reserves to cover that), however, considering they probably took in and then spent over 100 million on athletics in 2013, their machine keeps chugging.
