Aubrey and Ayanna can sub in at the 3 — I’ve been thinking about this prospect for awhile. What would it be like having them there? Would any team guard Aubrey on the perimeter? I suspect the answer is no, which means the lane would be effectively packed. Ayanna showed some perimeter shooting ability in high school — but will it translate to a legit threat at D1? I’m skeptical. This feels a bit like what some folks said last week about how this or that candidate for alternate point guard “can bring the ball up the court,” as if that’s all the position entails. Same for SF — it’s a lot more than just standing out by the 3pt line. It requires being a threat to score from there, which enables slashing to the lane. Aubrey can do the slashing, but without the perimeter shooting threat there won’t be any room to slash. On D the prospect looks a lot better. Aubrey, and probably Ayanna too, will be able to play lockdown D out there, and rotate back to rebound and offer help D. But on O, I fear this will create a 4 on 5 situation we won’t be able to sustain for more than a few minutes. And back to the question of the point guard spot, one of the reasons Stanford lost to us was that they didn’t really have one. Wilson and Lexie Hull are almost point guards, but not quite, and it showed. And it was even worse for them when Lexie was out with the nose bleed. Sure, Haley Jones can do anything, so maybe she can run the offense. But there’s a cost to that, too. Late in the game, when we were afraid of fouling, she could bull into the paint and score practically at will. But that lineup was too slow to stop us as well. Their final run was based on 3 pointers, and they came close to a come back with that. But I think the lack of a true point guard is what did them in.
