Anonymous coaches’ poll: What’s the best job in women’s basketball? The answers might surprise you

Is UConn the top job in women's basketball? Coaches say no.

Just posting the poll results. Lots of comments on why the jobs are good.

The poll was based on sending the question to more than 30 power conference coaches and assistants: What are the three best jobs in the country? (I asked them to frame their answers based on everything they think goes into making a program great to work.)

Nor I. I'm a little surprised Notre Dame didn't show up, given the pedigree of both their WBB and their AD generally.

Across all our sports, the main schools we're recruiting against are UCLA, USC and Oregon locally, and Notre Dame, Duke, Texas, and sometimes UVA (tennis and swimming especially), nationally.

(And when we've lost close recruiting battles in WBB, it's tended to be to Oregon or OSU, UCLA, UConn, or Notre Dame.) Once upon a time, though, Duke was probably our most consistent rival for top WBB recruits.

BTW Virginia and Texas beat Stanford this year in Women’s Swimming last weekend. Tori Huske did the equivalent of missing a free throw that would have sealed 2nd place for you but she missed! Her prelim time cost her Consolation Heat status (and 9th place) when her final time would have garnered her 4th place with those points passing Texas…but alas).

Same for UCLA. We have been the second choice in WBB for a number of high level recruits in recent years, with many of the same competing schools. I am curious as to why we end up on so many final lists. Is it the facilities (new and good), coaching (good atmosphere, poor skills development), education (just short of Stanford), fan engagement (low), or the campus and location?

Moving forward, a new wrinkle in the growth and sustainability of programs is likely to be their ability to promote the NIL situation and engage with fans (and recruits) through social media. The programs that get this right will be the ones to end up on this list in the future.
