“Miles Smith, the youngest son of Illinois head coach Lovie Smith, has been promoted from graduate assistant to full-time staff member as a defensive backs coach at Illinois. He will fill the coaching vacancy left after Donnie Abraham’s resignation earlier this month.
Miles will be the cornerbacks coach on an interim basis. His contract runs through January, after which Illinois will open up a national search for a long-term assistant, for which Smith would be considered. “Whenever you get a chance to work with your son, it’s a great thing," Lovie said.”

Based on the quote it is exactly what Corey was afforded. Randy fixed it though - weird that leadership couldn’t.

Agree. I also have to chuckle at Illinois’ legislature with its abysmal history of overt political shenanigans happily staying silent here on issues of ethics or nepotism, while Connecticut’s lawmakers resembled a bunch of witch hunting finger wagging puritans.

Gotta believe if and when Geno hires a family member, our legislature will not be in such a huff.

Nah, it was just one ethics committee that had no issues until they saw it was the football coach at State-U, then they were loaded for bear. Corey's employment is entirely above board and consistent with CT ethics law. Remember they had pre-approved it on a hypothetical basis, but then rejected only after they found it was Edsall. The ethics committee used two "fictions" to make it problematic. They disregarded the start date on Randy's contract, backdating it in order to an issue and they disregarded that the AD's office, not Randy, had hire, pay, supervision decision power over Corey.

Pretty good chance they'll be opening a national search for more than just a DB coach following the season.

CaneSport.com - OPINION: The Stomach-Turning Decision Mark Richt Must Make To Turn The Tide

When Mark Richt was pursued by the University of Miami, there was a final sticking point to closing the deal.

The University had anti-nepotism rules. Parents couldn’t hire and supervise their kids. Mark Richt wanted to hire his son Jon as his quarterbacks coach. It was a likely deal killer if the university rejected that request. One person talked to another and the University worked it out to land their man.

The culture in the south is different.... and really not comparable at all to anything up here.
