I came across an interesting assist-to-turnover statistic today when looking at NCAA D1 leaders.

As a team, UConn is #11 in D1 with a ratio of 1.36:1. Oregon is #1 at 2.03:1.

But what really caught my attention was the ratio for DePaul's Kelly Campbell at a ridiculous 6.42:1 through her team's first 13 games, including games against two pretty strong defensive teams in UConn and Oregon State. Campbell has been mentioned previously in this forum as a versatile player. Her ratio will likely come down significantly by the end of the season, but a ratio that high must reflect that DePaul's players shoot quickly in the offense and minimize the likelihood of turnovers by doing so. Still, that ratio remains very impressive so far.

I was on the NCAA women's bball site the other day and noticed how far down we are on the A/to ratio and the assists per game lists. We have always been top 1, 2 or 3 in the past. Not so this year. Might be because we are missing so many layups off a good pass, but that only explains a very little.

We are #11 on A/T0 and if you look at Assists per game (not total Assists since we only played 10 games while some teams have as many as 14), we are #12 (18.8 pg)
Not great but hardly a worry imho.

Losing Pheesa and Lou who were assist vacuums explains everything.

I think team chemistry will improve and thereby A/to will improve. Our women look very sloppy in their execution of offense as well as making passes to the opposition. As they become more familiar with one another and better understand fellow team mates' "playing habits" (for lack of a better term) I think SOME of the silly mistakes will cease. As stated before, the multiple missed layups are especially nerve wracking. Watching them early on has caused loss of much hair. I don't have a lot of that to spare so I'm counting on Geno et al to work their coaching magic and allow me to finish the season with a couple strands left. :)

During one of the Stewie - Mo Jefferson years the Huskies had five players with 100 assists. Does anyone remember the year and the other three players?

I’m not sure about the Stewie years, but the year after she graduated, we had five: Gabby, Saniya, Kia, and, I think, Crystal and Lou.

And since we’re talking about A/TO, I think Saniya finished #1 or 2 in tha nation that year.

Baylor with three players in the Top 11 and is #2 overall as a team. Mulkey is nodding her head in approval.

Oregon"s Moore and Ionescu are #2 and #4, respectively, on the national list. Both get their share of assists on passes for made threes in addition to getting the ball inside to the nearly automatic Hebard. Two recipes for assist success with limited risk of turnover.

If I were an Oregon guard looking for more assists, the first place I would look would be to Hebard inside or Hebard on the roll. Hebard's pick and roll action has tormented the PAC-12 her entire career and makes teams have to decide between allowing a midrange jumper for Ionescu or hope that Hebard misses inside the paint. Or go zone for a limited period. Not a lot of favorable options for Oregon's opponents. It will be interesting to see how effectively UConn will be able to defend that pick and roll action on February 3. ONO should be able to bother Hebard's shot. That may be the key to limiting Oregon's effectiveness in the front court.

I saw Dangerfield down the list at #121. I know that she has missed some games due to injury and hasn't been 100%. However, with a proven scorer in Walker to pass to and possessing great quickness and solid handles, I would assume that Dangerfield would excel in the assist/turnover ratio by the end of the season.

In watching UConn play this year I get a sense that we are making more
unforced turnovers than usual. Lots of sloppy, lazy, or overly ambitious
passes that never get to their intended destination. Seems like more walks
than usual too.

I have no numbers on any of this. Just my impression.

As a UConn fan from afar, I had an appreciation for all that Gabby Williams did during the few times that I was able to see her play on television. The above assist totals add further to cementing her legacy as one of the best all-around players in UConn history. I was often surprised when Geno would take her off the floor because I was hard pressed to speculate who could have a better +/- differential than this great athlete who played top shelf defense, could guard multiple positions, and was unselfish on the offensive end almost to a fault.

That UConn has had three recent seasons with 5 players above the 100 assist marks tells me three things:

1. Geno is truly exceptional as both a player developer and in-game coach; the former, for training his players to find the player with the best shot rather than take one herself at every opportunity, and the latter for running seamless offenses designed to find open players at all positions.
2. I've always thought UConn runs a more positionless offense than many teams, and that is very evident in terms of who's scoring from where, but interestingly, it's also evidence in the balanced assist numbers that suggest no one player is doing the lion's share of feeding or initiating on offense.
3. Less importantly, he uses a very short bench. Really hard to get those kinds of numbers with a meaningful rotation deeper than 6 or 7.

All in all, this is a really impressive set of statistics.
