I really don't understand why the portal can't just be pushed back? I understand it coincides with the end of fall semester, but most schools don't start up again until after MLK day. Is the CFP playoff still going to be going on then? Even if it was, by paying players we've already admitted they're not regular students aymore. Why can't athletes just have the portal dates that coincide best? Who cares if a kid misses the first couple weeks of school

I agree with this as well, the problem is that even if the typical Spring semester starts in January, it doesn't really give a whole lot of time for the student to transfer, register for classes, and physically move to the new school (it can be done, sure, but a typical student doesn't deal with this nonsense). I'm with you on the premise that the student-athlete, as it applies to football and lesser extent basketball, is really a misnomer akin to how professional wrestling was a "sport" rather than sports entertainment.

Now, take the student aspect out and just consider the athlete to be a minor league contract player, then yeah, you can move the portal to later, and if you start classes late, well it's no biggie cuz you're not really looking to get a bona fide degree transferring from school to school to school...what's the major, a bachelors in the Liberal Arts of portaling? What program are they matriculating into, seriously? Want a portal, okay, it should open after the last game (i.e., championship game) for that sport is played. I don't see a point in being established in the school for Spring cuz they can just portal out again in Spring and be in a new school for Fall. The rush to portal when games are still being played is detrimental to the sport.

And about NIL. These kids are making bank. Here's Penn State with a chance to win a national championship which is why kids are getting paid. Allar the starter could get hurt during the game and their backup is in the portal. None of it makes sense. And it's not like Beau wasn't a contributor. How long will donors want to keep funding NIL if the kids keep packing up and leaving.

"Pribula saw significant playing time in 2024 behind Allar. He was 26-of-35 passing for 275 yards and five TDs and rushed 38 times for 242 yards and four scores while appearing in all 13 of PSU's games."

Now this kid Beau, it will be interesting where he ends up. Of course he wants to be a starter somewhere, perhaps with another blue & white team.

Counterpoint:
"It is here where I have the gross task of defending the NCAA, a dysfunctional, do-nothing collection of presidential blowhards who proclaim that, at heart, they have the best interest of all involved."
"First and foundational: any player who enters the transfer portal doesn’t have to leave his school until he signs with another. So Pribula, a changeup quarterback who typically plays a handful of snaps a game, doesn’t have to leave the team."
"In other words, there’s zero reason for Pribula (or any other college football player) to be staring at “an impossible decision,” as Pribula wrote on social media."

the agreed wisdom is it does not matter. Nobody wants to be late in the portal game because it limits their opportunities so nobody wants to wait until after the playoffs to enter the portal

As long as Universities refuse to acknowledge the players as employees, this will unfortunately be the norm.
