Merry Christmas! Very boring week among the Top 10 in college basketball. There's going to be very little poll movement there, however Xavier will be a name to watch this week, especially with our matchup with them on New Year's Eve.

Top 10 teams with losses this week:
#6 UVA v #22 Miami

Here are some public AP ballots for week 8: (Last week's rank in parentheses). Also included Xavier's ranking
Jon Rothstein: 2 (2) Xavier NR
Jerry Carino: 2 (2) Xavier NR
Clayton Collier: 1 (1) Xavier 21
Mark Berman: 2 (2) Xavier 20
Dave Borges: 1 (1) Xavier 20
Chris Murray: 2 (2) Xavier 23

Non-AP Analytic Sites:
Kenpom: 2 (1)
Barttorvik: 2 (2)
Evan Miya: 4 (3)
Massey: 2 (2)
Team Rankings: 3 (1)
Sagarin: 1 (1)
Haslametrics: 2 (1)
Reddit Userpoll: 1 (1)
NET Rankings: 1 (1)

That Georgetown game really hurt us in the metric sites. But we're still #1 in the NET which is the most important one - and frankly the only metric that matters in March.

Prediction: UConn stays at #2. Xavier #25

Joey C. makes Big East honors for the week.

Because any time you tell the Boneyard that the world does’t totally revolve around the exact position any human or computer puts us in the middle of the season there are a few here who find their whole view on life threatened.
Thanks for explaining.

Marquette getting punished hard for a 2OT road loss to a decent Providence team. Total crap. Duke loses by double digits to Wake and they don’t move. BS

I'm surprised Dook didn't move up. We could have moved down too, being behind in the 2nd half dontchaknow

We got lucky

Because it's a clihcé at this point. There's a part of this board that thinks rankings don't matter at all despite the overwhelming hype and positive attention it brings the program.

That works both ways though doesnt it? There is part of this board that thinks being #1 vs #2 is the be all/end all in regards to hype and positive attention.

The AP poll means nothing. The polls that matter are the computer rankings which for the most part have us at #1

Does anyone actually think that though? It's a big deal to be ranked #1 or 2 in the country, but obviously that not this team's final goal. Saying the only ranking that matters is the one in April is is like saying "we just need to make some plays and execute"

#1, #2…..,at this level they’re basically the same. What would truly be disappointing is if we rolled out T Shirts celebrating a #1 ranking. That would be like like rolling out 25-0 t shirts.

The goal is to cut down the nets in April. To get there is a season long process that began with the start of practice. Great to be highly ranked now but in the big scheme of things it doesn’t compare to April. Let’s just take it one game at a time and not worry about the rankings. When I coached I told the players the goal was to win every possession and if you won more than half you win the game.

Luck? Levity is lost on this board

Come on, you can’t be this short sighted. The end goal is obviously cutting the nets in April, but how do you get there? You don’t take average joe off the street and coach him up with a coach who played a little high school ball and thinks he knows what he’s doing, all in a gym with bent rims and shared with the intramural pickle ball team.

No. If you really want to cut the nets in April, the best way to do that is to get the highest caliber players that fit your system, the highest quality coach that meets your needs you can get, in the best facilities you can afford, with the most fans in the stands you can motivate to help create a good atmosphere, with the most NIL money (argh) your players can get, etc etc etc. The AP poll, whether you accept it or not, plays into all of this. It helps generate interest from fans, gives you national exposure for recruiting, gives brand recognition recruiting/attracting players and coaching staff/sponsorships/etc, and on and on.

The AP poll is not the be all end all to anything college sports related, but it’s a great piece of the puzzle that helps make everything easier… right down to being able to watch your team on easy to access tv if you live outside the home market.

You may personally not care about the rankings, but it doesn’t change the fact that it really does affect a lot of the things you DO care about. But in the end, if you still find yourself not caring about the AP Poll, then just ignore it and enjoy the games! No need to tell everyone who does care that you don't care about it.

Then again, I think you know all this and you were just looking to argue for arguments sake b/c you don’t like how some people view the AP poll. This is an internet message board after all!

As an aside to the main post, I am spending an extended holiday in rural Indiana- Purdue country. Got in a discussion with some PU fans. I talked about their freshman guards and Edey. They tried to talk about Uconn but one guy said "we'd beat you because you have no big man". Act like you've been there before guys. Please

Well, you see... they have a 7'3" minimum height to call someone a "big man" :D
