AP Women's Basketball Poll Week 9

No change in the top 13.

Cal drops from #14 to #18.
Iowa drops from #16 to #19.
Arizona State drops from #17 to #22.
DePaul drops from #19 to #24.
Miami drops out from #24.

Michigan State leaps from #21 to #15.
A bunch of teams climb 2 or 3 spots as beneficiaries of their peers' losses.
For example, Gonzaga hops from #20 to #17. (When was the last time a mid-major was ranked this high?)
Iowa State re-enters at #25.

The highest mid-major I saw last year was Green Bay who made it to #19 twice, but dropped a Horizon League game both times they were at #19.

Took me all the way back to the 14-15 season to find a mid-major ranked 17th. Dayton made it to #17, Princeton (31-1) went as high as #13, Chatanooga also made it to #17. It was a pretty big year for mid-majors.

Thanks for doing this research. I can really geek out on the trivia. I remember Dayton was really good that year. Princeton went undefeated but was seeded only #8 and lost to Maryland in the 2nd round.

Yup. There was a point when James Madison, George Washington, Florida Gulf Coast, Chatanooga, and Princeton all were top-24. Hard for mid-majors to get the votes unless the have a win like Gonzaga did over Stanford.

Green Bay had an opportunity to be ranked very highly last year. Wins over Arizona St., Marquette, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and a loss to Mississippi State. They blew it with two conference losses.

I'm still trying to figure out how DePaul drops from #19 to #14.
Ha, thanks for catching that. I can only type so many numbers until I make a mistake. :)

How the heck did Cal rise to 14? What were they ranked in the preseason poll?
I'll just note that I am on record as stating multiple times that Cal was overranked. They were overranked to start the season and they were extremely overranked at 14. They looked good against UConn, but then again so did St. John's and Oklahoma.

Alot of overranked teams, but who do you replace them with. Head bang

Who was it that predicted yesterday that South Carolina would move up a couple of spots and that Miami would drop out. Why is SC still ranked while there are teams that should be in. That's why I like the coaches poll over the AP, most of these AP voters don't even watch the teams that they are voting for they just read the box score and many vote using the the previous years record. I predict that SC will have double digit losses at the end of the season, and will lose in the Conference tournament before the Championship game.

The Massey rankings are a decent starting point for discussion. Cal was #19 before the loss to Harvard, now #32. Minnesota was #18 coming into today and will surely drop after today.

Teams in the Massey top 25, but not in AP top 25:
  • Florida St (19 in Massey)
  • Utah (21)
  • Virginia Tech (22)
  • South Dakota (25)
