UConn's defense regarding the 2013 post-season ban? The NCAA in their ultimate wisdom punishes UConn twice for the same apr scores, retroactively imposes a new rule that makes it impossible for Uconn to overcome, all while our apr scores for the last 2 years show dramatic improvement that deserve recognition not ridicule.

The NCAA decides to gut a program to prove how tough they are and no one cares....National sports "reporters" are as big a joke as the NCAA....truly a bizzaro world.

My biggest problem with the whole thing is that a lot of writers, and certainly fans, have acted like the national championship now has a blight on it. Like I said in another thread, we could print "978 APR" on the national championship rings if we wanted to. Those kids had nothing to do with it - and even the statement from the shill at the NCAA ("the problem is with the academic performance of the men's basketball team" - i.e. present tense) leads people to that conclusion.

No. Frankly, if JC were a more sympathetic figure you might see someone step forward. But, whether the situation is fair or not, I don't think many of these national journalists mind seeing JC and our program languish.

They aren't stepping forward because our program has seen more than its share of problems. They may think that retroactive punishment isn't fair but they also think that our academic and disiplinary issues are deplorable. They probably see our program the way most college basketball fans see us and it isn't flattering. The irony is if the things that happened at Uconn occured at another school we would calling the players thugs and the coach a slimeball.
Guys like Bilas and Vitale have said they didn't think the punishment was fair.I don't think it is fair. We screwed up big time and we should either sue or stop whining about it.

You have to be kidding me.

You think other schools are better.

Who are people here calling thugs?

I think your post is way off.

I dunno if Aaron Torres counts as 'national', but he seems like our best hope. He definitely gets it.

But once again, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that UConn's PR people have been utterly comatose through this whole episode. Herbst would do well to clean house over there, ASAP...

I'm not sure Bilas has come to Uconn's defense specifically, but he seems to have a personal vendetta against the NCAA and ongoing criticism of their logic on a daily Twitter basis.

A national reporter or two will come to our defense in this matter, but not until they stop getting clicks for trashing Uconn. Once that angle works to a natural conclusion we'll see a burst of articles questioning if Uconn has been penalized too harshly.

This is a strong corollary of my earlier point about JC's being unlikable making it unlikely for someone in the press to stand up for us. I think you're right that not just the press itself, but the national fans enjoy seeing JC and the program suffer, and the press reflects that.

I totally agree. That post, if I didn't know better, sounds like it came from a Cuse or a Puke fan. I am really sick and tired of all of the exaggerated spin associated with this incident that makes it seem like the basketball staff are a bunch of irresponsible clowns who bend and break rules to suit their fancy for the sake of wins. I would love to shine the same bright light on the NCAA and on the personal lives of many of the so-called media experts using the program for target practice. There are, no doubt, plenty of warts to find; and more than a few of them would run for cover shaking if they had to deal with that type of scrutiny. It is all absurd. I'm not saying the program or the university are above responsibility or accountability; but the punishment is so far out of context it defies understanding. It is clear to me the NCAA were looking to make an example; AND, more importantly, trying to find a reason to justify their own miserable existence.

GO HUSKIES!!!

I love Calhoun as a coach, and I'm a big UConn fan, but I was a member of the media back in 98-99 and I witness how he treated reporters who dared to ask a question that he didn't like. I was personally embarrassed to learn that my hero could be such an balloon knot. This doesn't take away from what he's done for our program, but it does explain why the press isn't coming to his aid.

Which begs the question: is there a Horde member (or any media member for that matter) intelligent enough, mature enough or comfortable enough in their own skin to look past their own feelings and emotions and just report the damn story?

Of course this eliminates Jacobs and DiMauro off the bat, so apparently we'd have to set our sights a bit lower. Daigneault?...

you had writers(Forde, O'Neil) saying that UConn's initial concessions to appease the NCAA and overturn the ban should be denied way back then, they're not going to change their tune now. The media doesn't like Calhoun so seeing him take a hit and the program dinged up serves them better than to talk about how innocent kids within the program are taking a hit. Whether it's right or wrong Calhoun has done himself no favors over the years with the way he has battled the media.

Nobody is coming to UConn's defense. The Big East is treating Temple better than UConn. Other coaches haven't offered any support. It's a new day, get used to it.
