Not asking him to beg by any means. People on this board have pointed out that he is actually discouraging players from financing the project. There were actually quotes from Ray Allen posted here echoing those sentiments. He wants the "fans" to finance it.
I was the guy who had those quotes.
Calhoun's point was not clear, but that's Calhoun for you. My interpretation of his position is that, in this state, there really is no excuse for there being a shortage of donations from the fanbase. He's right.
We have a rabid following in both men's
and women's basketball (a point that better not be understated, considering the rarity of such), and we're a wealthier state than most. Other schools with less resources seem to get this done, so what's up with us? Hell, Quinnipiac got a gorgeous practice facility built mostly with private donations. Think about that.
If you look around the country a bit, I can see why Calhoun is so frustrated, and would bristle at the habit of bringing up his former players when donations are discussed. It makes us as a fanbase seem like whining deadbeats.
It also puts in stark relief the failures of Jeff Hathaway as a fundraiser.
