Another Geno successor

There’s a lot of very good coaches out there. I strongly suspect that whoever takes Geno’s job once he retires will have a connection to UConn. In any event, Geno’s current contract pays him up to $18.7 million with incentives, through April, 2029. I expect Geno to be around through the end of that contract and very possibly consider an extension. Speculation about who will replace Geno seems premature imo.

Any athletic director that is responsible for a program that has massive success and brand value, and worth his or her contract, will have a succession plan mapped out with multiple options. AD David Benedict, or more commonly known as Athletic Director Dave Benedict here at UConn, did a masterful job of transitioning from Jim Mora to Jason Candle for football. There was a lot of angst and assumptions on who would be the next coach, and IMHO, AD David Benedict was quietly putting together the hire.

Barring necessity it seems silly to me. Who would leave with Sarah for 2 more years? Plus KK and Ash for 1, Blanca for 3 (almost incomprehensible), Kayleigh for 2, Jana for 2, Ice for 2 now it looks like, The Big O etc., Kelis and more. Pretty hard to retire with the best player in the country coming back and improving each year significantly and a great point guard with a great back up and a quintessential floor/glue player in Ash. Who knows what Blanca will be like next year with FF experience under her belt and a summer of work outs and conditioning? OMG.

Why are people constantly wishing geno out the door? We we are the defending champs, wejust had a game last night, we are undefeated in the number one ranked team. Maybe those are better things to talk about?

Honestly, I think the board should treat coaches potential retirement, the same as players potential transferring and not discuss it until it's announced.

I don't think the OP wants Geno to retire. In fact, I am guessing no Husky fan does.

I think the point of the post is that Robyn Fralick is really good. She dominated at DII Ashland, turned BG around and has MSU rolling with one of the best post players in the country.

I, like everyone else, think his replacement will have Husky ties. It doesn't mean there aren't those who would do well in Storrs. Fralick is one.

Jason Candle has not even taken the field yet so the jury on him will not convene for at least a year. Any coach that takes over for Geno will be given a three-five year contract, so not until then will we know if the hire is successful. Who knows, Joe Shmo may do a better job than a current good coach, so lets just relax and wait for him to retire. We know nothing.

The point is why bother talking about it in the middle of the season? Aren't there better things for us to focus on as fans?
While I generally agree with your post, given the general level of discourse here on the BY, it’s pretty clear that Boneyarders will talk about anything and everything at anytime. I say that having started a thread this morning on Pizza which is now up to 21 posts and growing……

Coaching is one aspect and there are probably many who have the experience and knowledge. It's the draw of the coach and the program for recruiting a top 25 prospect to come to Storrs CT as opposed to some other places however that will determine the success of any replacement. Taking over from a legendary coach and an unsurpassed program in the new NCAA transfer portal/NIL world will be an enormous challenge for anyone to want to take on knowing what they have to live up to in order to succeed. Maybe if the science advances fast enough Geno can be cloned before he leaves and continue on for another forty or more.

My point was in regards to the process, not what Candle may or may not do. I agree that we won't know if he's a good hire for a while, however AD David Benedict did his homework ahead of time. There are too many universities that get caught flat footed when a coach leaves.

Yes, but 20 of your responses are about their favorite toppings. Ugh. What's that about? Makes me consider giving up the ghost!

I agree. It seems about once a month lately we have a "who will replace Geno". Why? Has he said he's retiring? Does he have 1 foot out the door with tons of other obligations and activities? Has his recruiting fallen off the face of the earth? Good grief. Enjoy the ride while we are on it. Worry about the next step when that time comes.

Seems to me the AD will have several options:
  1. Ask CD if she would take over for a period of time
  2. Hire one of the current assistants (It seems that Tonya and Jamelle were failures as HC's so that would seem to be Morgan or bust)
  3. Hire a former UConn assistant/player to keep the UConn tree continuity in tact (I find it hard to imagine Shea or Carla would want the job given the pressure of it and likelihood that they'd be fired in 4-5 years (see Tennessee's mess since Pat). Who then? Tamika? Seems a waste to "limit" it to the UConn coaching tree when there may be better other options.
  4. Hire a proven non-UConn HC (a-la Walz, etc.). Not sure who, if any, established/proven HC's would want the gig.
  5. Hire an up and coming current HC with a proven record at their mid-major
At this time I have NO preference because if/when Geno retires in 5-10 years, the landscape will have totally changed. Also, as mentioned by @BRS24, the AD has shown he's able to do a LOT of homework and searching to find the right person. I have no doubt that will happen if/when Geno retires.

Terrible problem to have huh!

Yes but necessity could come at any time and WILL come soon. It would be incompetence if the AD isn't having this same discussion. So why can't we?

No one wants it to happen. Everyone wants to push it off for as long as possible. But we are all mortal.

There is a lot of time between games. Some people can track multiple topics. What's the big deal? Don't read the thread if it bothers you.

The whole point of posting online is that people will comment. That's mine. "Don't read it if it bothers you."
