Nice. Maybe if Ray, Okafor, Gay, etc and all the other multi-millionaires in the NBA start doing what is right, the facility will be paid for and construction can start.

So we are up to $5.5M now. Anyone recall the total cost estimate?

IIRC -- The Werth's gift raised the total "in hand" to circa 16 million. This gift announced today brings the total in the bank to 17 million. The projected cost for the building is 30-32 million.

I may be off by a million somewhere -- but these figures are in the ballpark.

The shovel is not in the ground yet, but UConn is halfway toward the $30 million needed to build a new basketball practice facility. The school got there because Peter J. and Pamela H. Werth of Woodbridge have made a $4.5 million pledge, the largest single private gift ever to athletics at the university.

From the Courant files.

Jim Calhoun has said this line of thinking is absurd, and I agree with him.

Hey, the donations so far now skew towards the MBB side, and would even more so in your scenario where you start spending other peoples' money. Any WBB donors planning on helping out now? Any? Or is the men's program going to carry all the water here?

Is this post serious? I assure you sir, you know not what you say. It is a fact that dinner with Geno was one of the influencing factors into the Werth's donating. Which donations that you refer to are skewed to the MBB? The Werth's are season ticket holders in football, men's AND women's basketball.

Oh, and don't let this small section of the Courant's article on Werth's donation get in the way of the ideas you have made up in your head:

"Werth’s friendship with Auriemma was apparently also an important component to getting this deal made.
“Geno and I are friends,” he said. “My wife [Pamela] is huge fan of the women’s basketball program. She follows all of the women’s players in the WNBA. She knows which ones went to Minnesota and so forth.
“So going to the Czech Republic for the world championships [in 2010] was a natural step for us since there were so many UConn players on that team. And we’ll be going to London to follow the Olympic team because we’re sure UConn will be well-represented on that team, as well.
“Geno and I have seen each other at many functions, but we actually had lunch together at Max’s Downtown [in Hartford] once [where the donation was seriously discussed].”

WBB fans, step up!!

zls, as much as I agree that we have no knowledge about what any former athletes have given, men OR women, your comment is absurd since the means of male and female athletes ability to give is incredibly unequal. many of Calhoun's past comments regarding this are nonsense. Every athlete male and female should be approached to give the same as every alumni. Plus since there are numerous anonymous donors you have no possible knowledge of the ratio of men's vs women's program supporters. While I agree speedoo's comment is unfair and wrong, so is yours.

Now once again I offer $50 dollars to start a Boneyard gift to support the project. I'm a rural parish pastor and I'm not an alum, but I am willing to help make a start towards this facility small as it is. Want to join me, zls and speedoo, anyone else? Anyone else want to be part of organizing this and help to take action instead of quibbling and dividing UConn fans into we and they?

Werth isnt a former player...

And? His comment was clearly referencing the fact that if any former players gave money from the Men's side, that would continue to skew donations from MBB donors as opposed to WBB. Seeing that we have ZERO current knowledge of any former players on either side donating, his comment that all donations have been skewed to the men's side can only be a reference to donations we have discussed earlier all being from MBB fans/donors.

It was wrong. So were you. Such is life.

Ray, Okafor, Rip or whoevever else was mentioned was compared to Werth (as if he's a former player) when saying the women's side hasnt chipped in.

of course I understand saying that Werth chipped gives the womens side some points BUT I was going back a lil further in the thread when Speedo mentioned the men's players.

sooooo if it makes you feel better that Im wrong... cool!

did you chip in to the score prediction thread... show me how much you really know!

If there is 16 million in hand, equal would be 8 million from the men's and women's programs if the funds were supposed to be raised mutually. The minimum attributable to gifts from the distaff fans is 4.5 million from the Werth's through the contact and conversation with Geno. Just as it is foolish to designate the Werth's gifts only to the women's side it is stupid to attribute funds through, generally, men's fans all to the men's program. It is UCONN basketball and not a competition. It is all Husky pride.

Thanks, Alex I think it would be great to make a Boneyard gift.

If I win a $100 million in the lottery I think the IceBear-Boneyard practice facility would have a nice ring to it. ;-)
