American Athletic Conference Unveils Strategic Plan

American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco today released the Conference’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on providing students at its member institutions with the highest quality academic, athletic and personal experience competing in a Power 6 conference.

The plan is a working document which identifies The American’s core philosophies and activation plans that will support the league’s mission. The Conference’s Strategic Planning Subcommittee, led by East Carolina University Director of Athletics and Chair of the Athletic Directors Committee Jeff Compher, and the Commissioner and his staff, worked collaboratively with the various conference constituencies as well as with consultants Wasserman Media Group, to develop this plan.

The plan highlights five pillars, which are the foundation of the Conference’s mission and which are key to maintaining and enhancing its role as a national leader in intercollegiate athletics.

-Student Health, Safety and Well-Being
-Academic Excellence
-Athletic Excellence
-Branding, Marketing, Communications and Public Relations
-Revenue Generation

The "Multimedia" slide on page 16 of the PowerPoint presentation contains something I found interesting:

4.37: "Explore putting the American Digital Network exclusively on a prominent over-the-top offering as a precursor to a broader future arrangement involving live football and basketball games"

Is this a sign of things to come with the next "tv" rights deal? Instead of being plugged into cable or satellite is the AAC going to explore a solely OTT option for its sports content? This would be an incredible mistake in my opinion.

Edit- then there is this on page 18:

5.02: "Identify competition for our rights by evaluating traditional media platforms and staying attuned to the latest trends and emerging media platforms in order to prepare ourselves prior to entering the marketplace"

5.03: "Visit regularly with prominent digital and technology companies in order to understand their future content and distribution strategies as it relates to live and pre-packaged sports content"

5.04: "Monitor the media marketplace and embrace new, emerging technologies that will differentiate the Conference from its peers and help it reach new fans"

5.05: "Explore developing multiple rights packages when we enter the marketplace"

Everything mentioned on page 18 is being done by all the other conferences too. The time to have done this would have been 5 years ago. Now, it's too late.

Does Memphis have any hope, academically? UL actually markets itself based on success in athletics and that's about it.

There will never be a "power 6". We are more likely to see a P4 than a P6.

I understand Aresco has to try and make gold out of mud, but it just isn't happening. Other than UConn, this conference is still on par with Conference USA ten years ago. Ten years ago, no one saw CUSA as a power conference.

You have to keep pushing this concept for two reasons. First, because perception is reality and setting the narrative is important to any possible financial inroads. Second, because it's not a lie. The gulf in football between us and the Mountain West is large. In the Olympic sports, it's even larger.

Keep pushing, Aresco...

The Big 12 is soon to start it's next stage of dying. When UT and Oklahoma leave, the leftovers will be in trouble. Even if UCONN, Cinnci, Houston and BYU join the leftovers, that conference doesn't get the $$ that the other 4 get. That being said, the American has to put itself in a position that will command more money. If ESPN hadn't imploded monetarily, the American idea of exposure first, money second would have worked.

Aresco continues the long tradition of trying to make a silk purse out of sow's ear. It just won't work...

Not sure what choice the AAC has or even the Big 12 has. You continue to compete, fight for $'s, and make it to the next rounds of decisions/actions. Then you do it all over again.
For those keeping score, it was the ACC that was a dead man walking conference only a few years ago. Things change.

History has proven that someone will always try to build a better mouse-trap.

I didn't realize Diaco got a second job as Director of Long Term Strategy (DOLTS) for the AAC. Saying we consider ourselves as part of the P6 is very nearly as dopey as unilaterally deciding to have a rivalry game with UCF.

Aresco: It doesn't matter if what the P5 says. As long as we say there is a P6 and that we are part of it, then it's true... to us anyway.

Not only that, but UConn better be careful it doesn't slip down to the old CUSA level or all bets are off.

So when is Aresco adding a P6 patch to all American Conference uniforms?

You may be joking (not sure), but I'd be all for it!

The P5 is a made up thing. No more valid than a Diaco-made trophy. The P6 would be equally valid. It would essentially be saying, "We're better than the Mountain West"...

I'm not that serious. Sure, sounds good, but then you realize you just made a Diaco trophy for your uni as you noted and then it doesn't feel very good at all.

The way that it becomes powerful is when you start beating the "P5" teams with your "P6" patch on your chest. It makes it much harder for them to say that your wrong when you do that...

A P6 patch would make others laugh as us more than the made up trophy game. We don't need that.

Odds are that we are in this conference permanently.

Start embracing the P6 concept because it's very likely the only way we are ever going to be associated with a capital P.

If your going to do it, f it and just put a P5 patch on the shirts. Put the other conferences on notice.

We've gotten P'd all over throughout this entire process.
