“We have to play really smart, really hard and we have to play really unselfish to overcome whatever lack of talent we have, especially against a team like Notre Dame."

Definitely have to agree with this statement.

"But we have guys on our team who just won’t listen to anybody, not just me. We have guys who will not listen to anybody; they won’t. And there is nothing I can do about it."

Throwing the team under the bus?

And himself?

“It’s my job, so I guess I am doing a lousy job of coaching this year. … This team has not improved. Since the last time we played Notre Dame, I would have thought we’d make great strides. We have not. This is one of the few years I can remember that it’s been the case.

Good point...

Is there room for some of the fans under the bus?

There is nothing in JA's blog that says Geno "ripped into the team". He took them out of the game and he explained why to the press. But he knows very well how bad they must feel and yelling at them after the game was not what he did, evidently, and that's good.

I was just quoting what John tweeted.. "Geno Auriemma rips into his team after ND loss"

The blog you linked is titled "Geno Auriemma Takes His Team To Task". I don't see any tweet.

No, just the folks that are not listening to his instructions.

When Geno wasn't taking his team to task, here are some of his comments:

What was the turning point of the game?
“I think the story of the game was pretty much written [during Notre Dame’s 12-2 run]. We were fighting an uphill battle the rest of the game, it felt like. Every time we tried to make a bit of a run, we would commit a stupid turnover and every time we turned it over, they scored off of it. I think there were a couple plays, back-to-back, that we turned it over and they scored. The fact that we couldn’t keep them off the offensive boards [was also a factor]. They’re just better than we are right now.”

Were there any positives to come away with?
“Stefanie [Dolson] was great. She had a different attitude about her. I thought she looked like she did last year. There was a body language in her that I haven’t seen at any other time this year. She managed to keep that the entire game, which was a great positive for her personally and for us going forward.”

On UConn’s inconsistencies:
“It’s been a couple of week, a month maybe, where somebody steps up and somebody back up. When you get a team like Notre Dame where [Skylar] Diggins plays well, [Natalie] Novasel plays well, [Deveraux] Peters plays well and they get a great night from [Kayla] McBride, all of a sudden you just don’t have enough.”

I only know what I saw.

First half we kept it close and even led often. How? Hayes and Dolson were simply spectacular. I think they scored the first 35 points and then Bria chipped in a few. The others weren't scoring but they were not playing especially badly either.

The turning point in the game? Kaleena's second foul (a bad call I thought, a view that was shared by several thousand others in attendance, all with keen eyes and an unbiased objectivity:rolleyes: ). She came out right away and for the rest of the half she was in out in out in out and never got into any sort of rhythm or groove. Credit ND for watching the film of the Marquette game and paying close attention to her when she was on the court.

Second half, Kaleena made some contribution, Tiff and Stef played well but were unable to maintain their blistering first half pace.

Meanwhile, McBride (who? McBride) lit us up repetitively and our offense deteriorated into a systematic occurrence of turnovers turnovers and yet more turnovers.

We were outplayed and outshot. There is hope for the future. If this team has any pride at all, they will buckle down (follow the example set tonight by Tiffany and Stefanie) and hope they can do to ND what they did to us last year.

Let's hope.

Actually, toned it down for his headline. Another example of the dangers of Tweets, more often they make one seem like a twit.

Nothing Geno said was over the line. it was all true. He held himself accountable, as well. Plus, all his comments yesterday were about playing the game the right way and for the right reasons, including the comment about the banner.

Geno's explosion is an ephemeral thing. He said at the beginning of the season that we would not win it all, He had a sense of our youth.
Last night's game--against an older squad-- simply demonstrates why we won't win it all. But, hey, it's still a good season, and we can
anticipate next year, when we won't lose a single game.:)

I didn't think it said anything good about his attitude toward the team coming into the game, if he said he wouldn't hang a BE banner...if they won, and shared it..At least give them some credit for what they did accomplish...I think it was a bad move on Geno's part.

The one thing I didn't get (from a fan's perspective, so I don't know exactly what they didn't do that Geno was instructing them to do) was that the lack of defensive rebounding was what I saw as a constant problem, even with ND's excellent ball movement and good shooting. So I wondered why he didn't go more often to a 2 post lineup to get Kiah into the game with a fairly limited responsibility on D, and a primary role to box out on the weak side where we were getting murdered. Maybe it would have been risky with regard to who she guards, but it might have shored up the big issue. Anyway, ND looked the better team on both sides of the ball.

I read it as Geno taking equal responsibility for the loss last night and the lack of consistent progress this season.

I thought what he said was spot-on.

I think one of the announcers said he said Kiah wasn't ready yet..

You got that right Icebear.
When a team comes out after a timeout on moore than one ocassion and players are looking around confused, something's wrong.

After reading some of the press-conference quotes at the UConn site I wondered what happened to set Geno off on his team. Well, according to Rich Elliott's blog, it was a question about the team's lack of fight. This is the type of stuff that drives someone like Geno crazy because it's not something he's seen too often at UConn (since 2006-2007). It's difficult to read this about a UConn team and it was even more difficult to watch it last night.

When asked about his team's lack of fight, Auriemma didn't hold back.

"No, we have none. If they had it, it would have come out. When Maya left, she took all of it with her and we have been trying to find 'where is it?' If anybody comes from Mars lands in this room in the next five minutes and says 'man that coach must be in deep (trouble) with his bosses. They must be 4-27 and we are (26) and 4 but our team has no fight., I will tell you a lot of good things that our team does but that is not one of them, You know what kind of fighters we are? We are the kind of fighters that throws punches and if you back up we will keep punching you but if you punch us back we are going to run and hide, I don't think you win any world championships doing that."

Tiffany Hayes, the team's only senior, believes her squad does have some moxie and spunk.

"We have to not let ourselves get pushed back, we have to fight," Hayes said. "We can't just talk about it, we have to do it. It has been happening to us a lot this year, we just have to dig deep inside ourselves and learn how to fight back when somebody gets us back on our heels. I know we have it. I have seen it before, I have seen it in practice and in games, we just have to learn to dig down and get it whenever we need it."

Kiah was in a few times and seemed to be frequently out of position.
Yeah, but I was thinking take the confusion away by giving her a very specific job. Or Heather, for that matter.

You didn't get it, that's what frustrates a coach more than anything is after a timeout and having given specific instructions, the player does the exact opposite.
We as fans need to deal with the fact that we lost to a better team. the only way we can beat them is to play error free and have them have an off night, neither happened.
