UConn forward Alex Karaban, the only returning starter from each of the last two national championship teams, was named to the preseason watch list for the Karl Malone Award on Thursday. The award, part of the Naismith Starting 5, goes annually to the best four-man in college basketball.

The real question is how does Eric Dixon still have eligibility. Isn’t he 30 years old and has been on Nova for 8 or 9 years? Wild
He has tenure and holds the Carl Krauser chair in vocational athletics.

CBS Sports did a top 5 ranking of every position in college basketball this season. They put Karaban in the "Small Forwards" category as the #1 ranked small forward. Liam McNeeley is the #3 ranked small forward.

The highest-ranked small forward on our list was Karaban. Sandfort, who went through the NBA's predraft process this summer and elected to withdraw and return to Iowa, ranked second. Ranked a few spots below the returning star is McNeeley — the fifth-highest-ranked freshman on our list. McNeeley will play a key role for the two-time reigning national champions.

I was wondering about that. What's the difference between a "point guard" and a "lead guard"? And don't "shooting forwards" and "shooting guards" already include all "wings". Poetic license, I guess. Surprised they didn't have another position called "Post".

Karaban first team Sporting News Preseason All American (released today).

Alex Karaban, PF, Connecticut

Last year’s stats: 13.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg, .495 FG, .379 3-PT

Why he’s here: Karaban wisely went through the NBA Draft process after starting for NCAA championship teams in each of his first two seasons. And then, after learning what he could, he wisely withdrew to inherit the opportunity to become UConn’s featured player in 2024-25. He’ll get an even greater platform to show what his offensive versatility can mean to winning. He was third among the Huskies in shot attempts last year, and only fourth as a freshman, but he’s accurate from a variety of distances and an extraordinary foul shooter. He is an excellent ballhandler who has committed only 79 turnovers in 2,352 minutes of play, a significant portion of that time in highly consequential games. Karaban helps give UConn a legitimate chance to win a third consecutive NCAA Tournament – and another year at UConn gives him a shot at being fully valued by the NBA.

Maybe name it after Alex Karaban after he wins a 3rd straight championship. Wouldn’t it be great if Alex Karaban could be in contention to win the Alex Karaban award?

Broome has got to be the favorite but he shouldnt be on this list he's a center. otherwise i'd say it was Karaban's to lose.
