I know when I watch Arch Madness, I'm usually thinking... man you know what would make this better? Air Force.

If we added UCF along with the academies, we would have some decent markets and rivalries, along with an annual trip to Florida (good for recruiting):

RU/UConn (NYC-Hartford)
UL/UC/WVU (Ohio Valley)
Army/Navy/ (NY, Baltimore, DC, Denver)
USF/UCF (Tampa, Orlando)

Love the Service Academies. but not a fan of football only membership. Air Force has no problem competing the Mountain West currently for all sports. Only distance to the East Coast compromises their inclusion to the Big East & thus, entering the Mizzou Valley for the rest of their teams. Army & Navy are different animals altogether as they are in our footprint. Wish that they'd join for all sports.

The Big 12 is brutal. I think it has something like 3 non-conference losses this year. I honestly don't blame Air Force. In basketball you get rewarded for playing an incredibly tough schedule because you can get into the Dance on your SOS. No such benefit in football.

I like football only for the service academies. It would keep the basketball conference from getting too large and watered down. There is no way any of them can really compete in BE basketball and the Air Force AD pretty much makes that admission by saying they are looking at the Missouri Valley Conf. for basketball and olympic sports. I think this is the right approach as it also keeps more basketball money for the existing basketball schools.

If we could get Air Force, Army, Navy, and Boise State in for football only that would be propably the best case scenario for the Big East.

Can we get Boise with Air Force? I have presumed no since nobody talks about it.

I think SMU, Memphis, Houston, Boise, UCF and Temple would turn us into a good league over 5 years and leave Swofford speechless. If Boise is a no, take ECU. Army and Navy take us to 14. This would protect the conference if there were a couple defections and it has plenty of potential. It wouldn't be a league in 3 years and it would probably keep a BCS bid. Think big and MARKET PROPERLY. We don't market well at all in this conference and we don't play the media well either.

I agree. I think we can come out of this OK. Air Force is a better football program than Cuse. SMU probably is too. Boise would be a game changer. UCF, ECU, and Houston all could be very good programs. Having all 3 service academies would be prestigious any way you slice it. There is no reason for the Big East and UConn to just roll over and die and assume there is nothing that can be done to retain our BCS bid.

if Air Force (or anyone) chooses us over the B12 it's terrific news b/c it means at least they're confident enough that we'll keep our BCS bid to really bet on it. at this point our primary goal is keeping the BCS bid. we have to accept that we're going to be an ugly conference, but as long as we keep the BCS bid the rest is meaningless.

Exactly. That is absolutely all that matters right now. There also has been no real indication that losing it is even likely at this point so everyone needs to calm down and just move forward.

With all the academies in for football, it would require big brass ones to take away the BE AQ.....

+1

I believe adding the service academies was the plan all along to get to 12. Pitt and cuse are f up people

This is excellent news. I can see this be wrapped up by the end of the month, and the BE returning to being a viable conference. For now I believe that is the best situation for UCONN.

Refreshing to have good news. It's been a while.
Sadly a service academy saying that it is thinking about joining the Big East because it doesn't want to face tougher competition is what passes for good news these days. It is good news, no doubt about it but it shows where we are.

Good news is good news.

We ARE advancing in some form. And the message behind the scenes, that Mueh opines on, is that there is a TV deal still there. Better than MWC ... not the B12.

So what? We are where we are. Not mentioning something doesn't make it not true. We are a mediocre football program without any tradition, any big wins, any anything. If we can hold this tub together somehow it is a win win. Right now everyone is waiting to see what MO does.

Yes. We are where we are now which is a very weak football conference. The addition of the academies is one of the possible scenarios that keeps UConn's chances alive. The future is unwritten. Things have a way of changing. UConn's rise to prominence in BE men's bb would have been laughed at after Calhoun's first two seasons. So it is good to know that an option exists as a potential failsafe.

It should be an interesting several months.

Is is what it is. Maybe he is alluding to the fact that BE teams, generally compete for recruits on a level playing surface.

Don't disagree. As I said it is good news. Still it is a sad reminder of where we are.

Ugh. It is the Big East, not conference USA. The Big East needs to try and get teams within 2,000 miles.
