After difficult freshmen year, UConn sophomores look to prove their progress on D

>>Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos wasn’t around in 2018 to witness this group on the field, but he has coached long enough to know how overwhelming the game can be for freshmen and how much easier it becomes once they have some experience.

“You see them becoming better with the mechanics of the game, knowing the angles, understanding game situations, first and second down, third down, situational football in the red zone,” he said. “So in all those little things that we started in the spring that have carried over to the fall, those guys are getting better.”<<

>> It also helps that UConn players have experienced a full offseason, complete with proper conditioning and weightlifting. Travis Jones, for example, has slimmed from (at least) 350 pounds in 2018 to 336 this fall, while Pace has bulked up 15 pounds, Lazarus has added 14 and Paul has packed on 11.<<

And hopefully 3-3-5 is gone...along with the defenders 20 yards away from the play...
