So I got to watch a program featuring the 3 major sport coaches at Arizona answering pre-submitted questions - and mine regarding international recruiting was one of them, although Adia actually discussed international recruits (rather than the process) and new men's coach Tommy Lloyd (was at Gonzaga) chimed in with a couple additional points and affirmed what she had to say:

  • International recruits have a different work ethic, because they know they will be playing professionally
  • They are happy with the opportunity
  • Willing to play specialized supporting roles
  • No helicopter parents
  • and parents who do call don't expect to talk to the head coach because in Europe you don't get the head coach
  • Grow up playing against tougher competition (men)

2 other interesting tidbits -

Rule changes they would like:
  • Adia - shorter shot clock and FIBA key
  • Tommy - shorter shot clock, not the FIBA key, and not thrilled with 6 foul (3 per half) being discussed
  • Jedd Fisch (football) - helmet communication system and pass interference at the spot of the foul

Folks who influence them
  • Adia - Joan Bonvicini and Jenny Boucek, who is with the Dallas Mavs, among un-named others
  • Tommy - his high school coach, Mark Few and John Stockton
  • Jedd - Steve Spurrier and Bill Belichick - they talk multiple times per week

Really, she wants a shorter shot clock? She coaches a slow late in the shot clock sort of offense.

And if it was a shorter shot clock she would doubtless coach accordingly. She played in Europe for some time, she is coaching with Dawn Staley with FIBA rules, and she said she prefers a more up-tempo style.

Question - Are Canadian recruits considered international? Depending on who I've talked to the answer seems to be "It depends".

Here it seems to be if a player is part of Canada Basketball's development stream, coaches seem to appreciate how players are coached. I've heard similar comments about players who participate in the provincial development streams as well.

Shortening the shot clock, I more than understand. In Canada FIBA rules are used for most basketball competitions, with the exception of some high school federations. Personally, I like the idea, especially with the 14 second reset off a rebound on the offensive end. Ball movement and decision making with 6 less seconds would be interesting in NCAA play.

Interesting - and yes and no probably covers it. We have a player from Canada and at Rutgers we had Tammy Sutton-Brown in the day, and never considered them "international". But of course . . .

Interesting question.

Fisch has one of the oddest career beginnings you'll ever see...

didn't know his Spurrier connection or much about him at all. Interesting.

I think that's probably the best answer ??. I find it kind of amusing because I wouldn't have either. But when it comes to the paperwork to apply to a NCAA school we are considered international. In technical terms, I get it but it feels odd at the same time.

Regarding Sutton-Brown, I was in high school the same time she was. Got to see her play a few times in school tournaments. She was awesome.

You mean Canada hasn't been made a U.S. territory yet?

I jest. :)

As the lovely slogan of the Indigo bookstore reminds us, "The world needs more Canada."

Love it! ?

I've been told many times that I sound American anyways by people here in Canada and the US. Wouldn't surprise me that we became a territory and hadn't noticed yet. As long as it doesn't mess up our beer, I'm good.
