You need to be a subscriber to read the entire article in Monday's JI but here is a bit of a recap from the Dean of The Horde's informative piece.

Geno was planning to attend the Masters on Friday but overslept. Say...Jim Calhoun got to play a round at Augusta National after one of his rings....Geno should be afforded the same opportunity.
Hmmm...Condaleeza [sp?] Rice [new member down there] should invite Geno to play 18 with her and Geno could offer her elite seats to the Stanford at UConn game that kicks off next season....Stanford being her alma mater....she seems a genuine sports fan. I would be glad to fly to Georgia to caddy for either one using my AA caddy skills from approximately 55 years ago. Accompanying Condi to Gampel next November would be a pleasure as well. Just sayin'

Carl says that the staff will be recruiting this weekend. That sounds like multiple places and/or multiple targets. Is The Boo this weekend....the big AAU event in Virginia?

Hmm...who might they be looking at.from the...class of 2014...15...16? Double hmm...might they be looking to add another scholarship player from 2013 to join the Saniya class?
Inquiring [nosy] minds want to know.

I believe that Fred Couples offered Geno a round at Augusta if he won the NC a while back. I think it may have been one of the Diana years. So he may have been there already.

Per Geno, he overslept by about 7 hours. He must have been exhausted.

Condoleezza (Condi) did not attend Stanford. she earned her undergraduate degree at Univ. of Denver and graduate degree at ND. She was Provost of Stanford before she was Sec. of State. She returned to Stanford in 2009 to teach political science.

from wiki: "As of 2012 she is on the Political Science faculty as a professor of political science and on the faculty of the Graduate School of Business as the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy, in addition to being the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution."

She is very much a sports fans and can be seen at games for many teams, including women's bball. She is also Chiney's academic advisor.

She definitely is a huge sports fan! She has long said that her dream job growing up was to be NFL commissioner. She loves sports, period. This was a big part of why she was invited to an Augusta National member. She is a strong supporter and fan of the game (golf).

RE: academic adviser for Chiney - NICE ! Go Chiney! :D

Be reminded that the Augusta National Golf Club is indeed national. From its inception, members have been determined to avoid being a clique of good ole boys. Thus, when a member (e.g., out west) passes away, a new member is invited from that region to sustain widespread geographical representation among membership.

Each member has a coveted green jacket but they are worn only within the confines of the club.

Did you know that even into the 1990s, after he had earned his sixth green jacket and had longstanding success in business (course design etc.), Jack was not yet a member ? I read a great story about how he was teeing off in a practice round once around that time and they ran out to the tee to remind him that he needed to have a member with him. Jack exclaimed, "You have got to be kidding me!!"

He and Arnie have been members for at least 10 years now, but to my knowledge they are the only two former tour players on the roster. Perhaps Gary Player also (Lord knows he should be a member), but if so I have not read that anywhere. His name was not on the list that USA Today obtained some years ago.

I have only known a few folks who have been on those grounds during the tournament week....including one Dad of a former Husky.
To a person they raved about the beauty....about the huge elevation changes that are not properly reflected on TV....and the ridiculously low
prices for sandwiches etc....compared to other sporting events with captive audiences.

Any Boneyarders gotten in?

The father of one of my co-workers goes every year - he was kind enough to do a little shopping for a few people (me included) this year. Got a couple of Masters bag towels for my brother and a buddy of mine. They were only $12.

I think Augusta knows that they have enough $$ and it would appear to be in poor taste if they gouged people for more :D

Mrs. Kibitzer and I both attended the Masters a couple times. We took photos of Jack and Arnie one year (during practice round) and got them autographed the following year. They are now framed and displayed with our little gallery of sports photos (including Larry & Magic, the Mick, Willie, Stan the Man, Joe Di, Sandy, Ted, and two of the Mazeroski walk-off HR in the 1960 WS). I still need one of Russ. And Diana.

I also got whacked by a ball hit by Tom Watson during the par three and I still have the ball (unused since).

The aura of the Augusta National is simply unbelievable.

I think the coaching staff is just putting the finishing touches on some desired recruits ( Wilson ; Westbeld ; Calhoun , etc).........Just letting the recruits know that they are still loved and cherished.........Sort of like ....." Hi A'ja , Kathryn , Sierra , how you guys doing? Sorry to be just getting back to you . But yeah, we been away winning another NC. You should schedule an Official and come see the NC Trophy. Just wanted to drop by and let you know that we still love you. Want to date you for a year, and marry you in 2014. And have you come live in my mansion in Storrs. So full of NC's ; Conference and Tournament Trophies. Want you to come live where so many former Champions have resided.... And did I tell you that I am having a brand new practice facility built in my backyard. You guys could be the first to use it !! "

Yes , I can see Geno , CD , and Shea out on the recruiting trail with big smiles and a 2013 NC Win to talk to the girls about.

I was at a practice round the year of the boycott, also the day of our 2003 championship game. It was a long drive back to Atlanta! I also was at the men's Final Four semis in New Orleans that week. Just my luck--got Masters and NCAA tix in the lottery and the dates conflicted!

Observations re Augusta:

Even though it was muddy that year, it is gorgeous and immaculate. Not a single weed or bare spot. It makes many U.S. Open venues look like unkempt public courses. The azaleas and trees were not at their peak, but still stunning.

The course had just been lengthened. It looked more than long enough to me from the prior tees.

As they say, it is hillier than it appears on TV. Especially on soft ground, walking it will wear you out.

I chatted up the first African American member, CEO of Bell South. If I had AT&T long distance service at the time, he would have given me tickets to tournament days. Damn!

Walking into the property through the back gate is amazing. You leave a nondescript area with strip malls, go through some hedges, and enter paradise.

Prices are from decades ago. Nominal price on a weekly badge is about $200, maybe less. Black market price is about $3,000. Cream cheese and pimiento sandwiches were $1.85 and may still be.

Simply fabulous and totally unique!
