Good article about the ACC season, now that it is already over.

The ACC malaise ...

David Teel, a writer in the Daily Press in Newport News, VA, has always been fairly objective about the ups and downs of the ACC. He's definitely not a shill, and doesn't continually lather over them.

I had to laugh at this line;
"The non-conference season had its moments: North Carolina defeating Louisville, Michigan State and Kentucky; Duke besting UCLA and Michigan; Florida State beating Massachusetts and VCU; Syracuse knocking off Baylor and Villanova."

those are both good wins...

I mean I hate cuse but you have to give credit where credit is due. They kicked the out of Nova, in particular.

But, but I've been hearing all week that Nova was overrated and the worst 2 seed ever.

The ACC success in football v basketball is exactly indicative of the affects of basketball taking a backseat to football. I suppose the school presidents are willing to accept the tradeoff and that football success is more important and more money.

Back in the day the differences and arguments between the ACC and Big East were great. Sometimes, such as 1999 UConn, Big East teams had a big advantage heading into the NCAA tournament due to raising their level of play via a tougher conference. Other times during the 6-foul rule era and EVERY time Pitt is in the NCAAs, the Big East's overly physical style makes NCAA success harder. Now the New Big East is watered down and Creighton and Nova weren't as good as they could have been due to fewer regular season battles. And the ACC has become a mile wide but an inch deep with an unbalanced schedule (UVA didn't get enough games against Dook, UNC & Syracuse) . Much like at Boston College, after the initial curiousity factor fades, I'd bet ACC bball attendance drops with the overall quality of teams.

If that's the case "Florida State beating Massachusetts and VCU" must have had you in stitches.

Villanova had a good squad, and Baylor was one of the 5 best teams in the country when it wanted to be. That said, a major conference with 15 teams should not be pointing to a handful of nice wins as evidence of anything more than if a league plays enough games, a few will break its way. The ACC was not a good league by any statistical measure.

Nor should it be pointing to wins over UMass and VCU as standout wins from OOC.

Why not? Both teams had good years.
They had average years. The ACC purports itself to be the best basketball conference in the country, so if that's the case, boasting about beating a couple of borderline top 25 teams from the A-10 is a bit laughable.

wtf, the article is about the ACC underachieving. The article was written by a writer not the ACC. No one is boasting. IMO the outrageous sentences in question were thrown in there to acknowledge and refute ACC fans pending lame arguments that the conference had some success in the regular season. And its followed by saying any claim of decent W's is offset by bad losses. Article point & headline is "No sugarcoating ACC's disappointing bball season", at worst that one sentence inside slightly violated the title by having sugar inside.

Well, that's what I get for not reading the article and only reading the quoted text on here. I would still say that beating UMass and VCU barely qualify as "moments" for a conference of the caliber of the ACC, and the author seems to agree with me.

The ACC has sent only two programs to the elite eight in the last ten years. Think about that.
In contrast, the Big East sent UConn, Syracuse, Louisville, Villanova, Pitt, Georgetown in that same window, and UConn, Syracuse, Louisville, Villanova and Georgetown all made the Final Four in the last ten years as members of the Big East.

Even the SEC had a more diverse set up Elite 8 members in that period, since, if we go back to 2004, they had Alabama and Tennessee to go with Florida and Kentucky.

Yup, and LSU made the final four in 2005, and Tennessee made the elite eight in 2010. If you think about it, the SEC and ACC have been very comparable basketball leagues - two really good programs at the top, an inconsistent middle-class, and some dreadful teams at the bottom.

We all know that with the additions of our ex BE brethren- the ACC is the best basketball conference in the country top to bottom. If not first they are a close second.

People in glass houses- eh forget it. I give up-the AAC rules!!!

2006. But I forgot them. So five different schools in the E8 rather than the 2 schools from the ACC.
