Nothing too new in this cbssports.com piece, but there is a source in the ACC with a couple quotes.

Expansion-related discussions in the ACC typically start with the "4-4-4 Committee," composed of four university presidents, four athletics directors and four faculty reps." FSU athletics director Randy Spetman and NC State faculty athletics rep Sam Pardue are members. The committee is in the conference-call stage, I'm told.

To add a school, ACC presidents would need a 3/4th majority vote in favor of the move.
A prominent official from an ACC school told me Louisville and UConn, the top suitors to replace Maryland, each have something to offer but stressed academics will matter to the presidents, which favors UConn. According to this list, UConn is ranked 63rd among U.S. universities while Louisville is 160th. UConn also has the better TV market, 30th to 50th.

But Louisville is the better football/basketball product, pound for pound. And a lot of people respect what Louisville's done under AD Tom Jurich. Will make for some interesting discussions among decision-makers.

"Who can bring in a full share to the table?" the ACC source said. ""When you bring in another mouth to feed, they have to bring in at least that same amount of money."

WTF does pound for pound mean??? Because UL's smaller or not as prominent academically its roughly equivalent fb success means more??? Or perception counts? But... deep breath, academics count, and overall this reporting is consistent with the hypothesis that UConn is sitting pretty and UL is scratching and clawing...

UL is a better football/basketball product? Maybe in 1986 this was true, but since 1995 or so UConn has been so far superior it's not funny.

It means, in their opinion, UL's fan base is nuttier.

You'd think 3 NCs in men's hoops since '99 would make you the superior program to almost anyone (except the bluest of the bluebloods).

So which criterion matters more? Tradition or what have you done for me lately? Doesn't seem like there's any consensus on this.

On Tuesday, November 20, 2012, Louisville is the better football/basketball package. So umm... Yeah they win, clearly.

I have been seeing this repeatedly...I would like a national guy to actually break down the on field performance and show that louisville pound for pound has finished below us in the big eats 4 times in football and ahead of us 4 times. In basketball they have finished ahead of us 5 compared to two, but with our 3rd national championship during that same time period I don't think its any question who the better overall bball program.

Better attendance, higher revenue, I suspect.

Give me a break. They invited BC, Pitt, and Syracuse. Have you looked at their stadiums lately in either football or basketball? Besides Cuse basketball there are entire empty sections all over the place. And it was the same way when they were invited.

These kind of reports scare the crap out of me.

Yeah, not seeing the better football/basketball program for Louisville.
Louisville has two men's basketball national championships, both in the 80's.

The University of Connecticut has
  • Men's Basketball - 1999, 2004, 2011
  • Men's Soccer - 1948, 1981, 2000
  • Women's Basketball - 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010
  • Women's Field Hockey - 1981, 1985

Remember what DeFillippo said : "TV - ESPN - is the one who told us what to do."
They better be telling the ACC to take UConn, because of a better TV market.

For the first time I really, really, really hope ESPN is driving the bus based on tv markets. I will stop saying mean things about them immediately if true.

Paul Doyle' latest piece from the Courant.

http://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-football/hc-uconn-acc-1121-20121120,0,7748080.story

The Hartford-New Haven Designated Market Area (DMA) is ranked No. 30 in the country by Nielsen, with 996,500 TV homes. At No. 48, Louisville has 670,880 TV homes.

That's more than 300,000 more TV homes, which equals revenue.

Market, market, market.
I'm not too good with DMA's... I'm guessing that those figures don't include Fairfield county, NYC, Springfield, or Worcester. I assume Uconn has some pull from those markets as well.

I don't think Lousiville has any pull outside of Louisville...

I cam home from dinner and picking up my bicycle at the repair shop, and there's no news?? Come on people, what are you shopping for turkeys or something?

The Hartford-New Haven DMA is defined as the 7 Connecticut counties not named "Fairfield" (which is placed in the NYC DMA).

Springfield is its own (110th ranked) DMA, and Worcester is part of the Boston DMA.

People don’t realize with CT it’s not just Hartford/NH, it’s the whole state, we are the only game in town, 3.5 mil plus a portion of NY and Boston. u of l splits not evenly I may add with Kentucky. We have a big advantage and our pres needs to drive this point home.
