Buckets at the end of the shot clock that just ripped the heart out of the opponent. Newton knowing what to do and when to do it at all times. Karaban bombing open 3s because Newton and Spencer were more than a handful to deal with. Castle as a 5-gallon bucket of glue. And of course Clingan, who was just so much larger than most other big men. In the discussion for the best starting five ever assembled.

I wouldn't consider that likely.

One theme we're seeing with Hurley teams ever since he brought in Luke and went with the more Euro-influenced offense is that we always play our best when we don't have to deal with Big East refs. We were still great in 2024, but that team was a juggernaut. Even still, 2 of our 3 losses were in conference and were clearly our two worst performances of the season.

This team looked top 3 good until conference play started, and since they've looked more like 10-20 level. I still feel good about our chances once we get into the dance.

I notice that some players do this 2 bounce and shoot them immediately without pausing while some hold it and then shoot. UConn must be working on what the best way is. Remember Bazz’ team hardly ever missing them?

I was curious about the stats on the free throw shooting on that team for the season. The team shot 77.7% on free throws, which according to the stats linked below was 4th in the country. This season that would be 14th in the country, still elite. That team only had 1 player over 80% for the season, Napier at 87% and he shot the most free throws on the team by far. Boatright was just under 80% at 79.8% (we'll round that to 80%) at very high volume also. Nobody else was close to those 2 in volume. Brimah was the only "bad" FT shooter who had some volume per game and he was at 57.4%.

This year's team has 4 starters who shoot 80% or better and then some bad free throw shooters who have decent volume. Reed is at 57.9% and has taken about the same number of free throws as Ball and Demary, so the top 3 players for free throw attempts on the season. Smith is at 51.4% and has taken the 5th most free throws on the team while Reibe is at 48.3% and has taken the 6th most free throws. Mullins hasn't taken many because he hasn't played as much as others and he also doesn't get fouled much.

So what does all this say? Get your best free throw shooters to the line. I know easier said than done! In crunch time I expect Demary, Ball and Karaban to be the guys at the line.

Nailed it! Problem is that our 4 top FT shooters don't generate a lot of contact/fouls.
