A look at the Southern Connecticut State University Owls

UConn's final exhibition opponent on Thursday 7:00 pm at the XL Center. Thursday's game will game number 4 on the Owl's schedule. They won their first two games against Post and Bridgeport. Their third game is tomorrow against The College of Saint Rose.

This game will give Geno another opportunity to take a longer look at the reserves against a much smaller Division 2 team whose two tallest players are only 6'0". It will also give them a chance to get ready for Vanderbilt's 6-5 post, Mariella Fasoula on Saturday.

Only two of their 11 players are freshmen, the rest are juniors and seniors (no sophomores). SCSU's players will get a rare opportunity to play against a top ranked Division 1 team, while the Huskies enjoy their final opportunity to workout against another team before their pre-conference season resumes Saturday against Vanderbilt at the Mohegan Sun Arena at 6:00 pm.

OWLS TABBED TO FINISH THIRD IN THE SOUTHWEST
The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Southwest Division as the 2018-19 Northeast 10 Conference Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll was released by the league office on Friday.

The Owls had an impressive 2017-2018 season as they went 21-10 overall and 14-6 in the conference leading them to capture the Southwest Division title and to clinch a berth in the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in program history.

Southern opened their season with a win at the Bridgeport Conference Challenge on November 10th, where they defeated Post University 74-64, and the University of Bridgeport 73-55. They'll travel to Albany, NY on Wednesday to face Saint Rose in their first conference action of the season.

The Owls will then hit the road to Northern Connecticut to face Division I powerhouse UConn in a prime time match up at the XL Center in Hartford on November 15.

The Owls are welcoming three newcomers to the 2018-19 squad - senior DeAnna McCarvell (Transfer from Salve Regina), junior Aaliyah Walker (Transfer from Odessa College) and freshman Najae White.

Southern is returning six players from the 2017-18 squad - seniors Amanda Pfohl, Allie Smith, Erin Ryder, juniors Bridget Sharnick, Kiana Steinauer and Imani Wheeler.

• Of those seven, two were the Owls top five scorers last year:
• Steinauer leads the group as she averaged 10.6 rebounds per game (led the team) and 10.1 points per game (second on the team) and 1.5 steals per game.
• Wheeler was fifth on the team in scoring averaging 5.5 points per game, 1.6 steals per game (led the team) and 1.8 assists per game (third on the team).

According to today's write up @uconnhuskies.com, this Thursday night's game will be streamed and on the radio (we knew that). I suppose we'll be able to see it (?), though I wish we weren't playing this one after opening the regular schedule with OSU. It's lose/lose for UConn with the added possibility of someone's getting nicked up. Because Geno will start his regulars (he believes that fans come to and are entitled to see his best players), we'll have our top five in harm's way for at least the early part of the game. The rest of the "contest" I hope will be played with our subs. Hopefully everyone comes out ready for the games that count.

I'm assuming this could not be helped. November 15 was probably the only "open" date that worked for both schools when they were trying to find a date compatible for both. Usually UConn's two exhibition games are scheduled BEFORE the regular season begins. It is quite unusual to sandwich a regular season game between two exhibition games.
