So I ran through some numbers regarding the NCAA and football and came up with some statistics.
There are 351 D-1 schools and 254 of them play football.
There are 305 D-2 schools and 169 of them play football.
There are 451 D-3 schools and 253 of them play football.

Here is where things get interesting:
California has almost 35 million people and only 21 football schools in all NCAA divisions. They only have two D-2 schools and that is soon to be one.

New England has 14 D-1 football schools and only 12 D-2 football schools. There are 32 D-3 football schools but schools sometimes break even on football at that level due to not providing scholarships.

It appears to me that there is a culling of the herd coming in NE and Cali due to lower high school participation, the CTE issue, and rising costs. This probably won't be a bad thing as the average talent level will be higher will fewer schools playing.

If UMass, URI, and some others dropped, it would probably be to our benefit.
