The Naismith Hall of Fame was established in 1959 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Originally operating at Springfield College, the Hall has moved twice and now resides at a beautiful $47 million building shaped like silver basketball. Over 200,000 visitors come every year to see and honor the best basketball players in history. They also come to learn about the greatest basketball coach every to blow a whistle, UConn’s Geno Auriemma. Geno and 99 other coaches have all been inducted in the Hall of Fame because of their spectacular records at every level of basketball. But only one, Geno Auriemma, has surpassed the achievements that got him into the Hall in the first place.
Auriemma entered the Hall of Fame on September 8, 2006. In the 21 years he coached prior to his induction, Geno’s record was an amazing 589-116, with a winning percentage of 83.5%. UConn won an incredible 5 National Championships during those years, including 2 undefeated seasons in 1995 and 2002. They also set an NCAA Division 1 record with a winning streak of 70 consecutive games. On five different occasions, Auriemma was National Coach of the Year (1995, 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2003). That kind of achievement will get you in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
What Geno and the UConn Huskies have accomplished since then is even more impressive. In 10 years, Geno and the Huskies improved their winning percentage to 95.3% with a record of 366-18. Ten years, 18 losses..! They have won 6 more National Championships including the last four. UConn has played 4 more undefeated seasons in 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2016. Why stop there? The Division 1 undefeated streak was extended to 90 games and UConn now owns the top 3 such streaks. In the 10 years since his induction, Geno has been National Coach of the Year 3 more times (2008, 2009 and 2011). Candidly, there could easily have been several more. During his career, Geno has posted a National Championship game record of 11-0. Eleven tries, 11 wins..! Not satisfied to dominate the collegiate level, Auriemma has coached the United States Women’s Olympic basketball team to two undefeated, Gold Medal championships in 2012 and 2016.
There is only one coach who could shatter records on the way to being inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame for basketball ‘s greatest coaches. And, that same coach is the only one capable of improving on an already spectacular career by running the table in the 10 years since that induction. Geno Auriemma. The best keeps getting better.

Thanks to my son David for coming up with the idea for this post. He pointing out that it has been ten years that Geno was inducted and how much he accomplished since. I would also like to thank DavidinNaples for writing because he just has a way with words and thought it would be best.
