Great news fellow BYers-the UConn WCBB attendance is up over 14% this year at 12,829 fans per game vs. last season 11,181. This current number is a 20 year high, second only to 2003-04 which saw 13,435 Huskie fans per game. We rank #3 behind SC (16,916) and Iowa (14,998).
As a season ticket holder for both Gampel and XL and any games at Mohegan Sun, Barclays Center, MSG or UBS Arena, I will tell you this increase is largely due to Paige Bueckers. The sheer number of little girls and fans with their #5 Jerseys and Paige signage is truly remarkable. I was at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Sunday in Providence and normally, PC aveages 848 fans per game (at Alumni Hall) and they had 7,483 fans and a huge contingent of Paige jerseys and signs.
Also, the 1,648 person increase per game is also 3rd nationally behind Kentucky (1,764) and Vandy (1,706).
There are now 7 schools who average more than 10,000 per game, which is up from 6 last year and is the most schools of all attendance keeping to have that high an average. Tennessee re-enters the grouping this year with 10,461 (up from 8,880 last year).
In the P4 plus Big East universe, there are 5 schools averaging less than 1,000 fans per game (Houston-878, St John's-873, Seton Hall-796, Georgetown-754 and Pitt-508).
Kudos to Xavier that despite a 6-18 record and 1-12 Conference record has increase their attendance to 1,296 fans (up from 753 last year).
All in all, the P4+BE WCBB is showing a mild increase in attendance-1,444, with 40 schools showing positive and 39 schools showing negative.
As was noted a couple of weeks ago, UConn ticket revenue is tops in WCBB and Geno & Company have certainly done more than their fair share at growing the game. Top 10 schools listed below.
